Fundamentally, for me - and I got lambasted for this yesterday -everything we have throughout the squad is just far too same-y. 1-0 down to the mackems, no fight, no application, and the "solution" Howe decided on was to swap Elanga for Murphy, Willock (?!) for Tonali and Barnes for Gordon. Genuinely, who looked at those subs and thought "right, now the mackems are gonna get it"? Certainly there's not one comment on this thread suggesting that was the case. I'd guess the vast majority of fans just looked at it and thought "where did all the money go?". Yes, there's a good summary on here about the hand Howe was dealt, and the progress we've made but the last two, almost three, years of poor transfers (in and out) and stagnation have hit us hard.
As has been said, there doesn't appear to be a clear idea from Howe about where we go from here. I said previously that I wondered if the ideas he got from his time at Madrid have just dried up and he actually doesn't have it in him to create a new dynamic to take us any further forward. Actually, not even forward, just in a slightly different direction so we stop being so utterly predictable, lethargic, bored-looking, etc.
