i get what you mean, but compared to the uk, greece in winter is paradise with the weather, i prefer it
    summer is way too hot
but just having more sunshine than the constant gray skies of the uk is a treat

Snowed in Athens last winter.. pictures of the Acropolis online in the usual places.

I was in Crete a few years ago in July and it was 38-40 degrees, but as wasn't working, it was fine.. was staying in the mountains so cooled down to 22-24 at night, so was fantastic to sit out in the dark. Longer car journeys weren't too pleasant though.

Winter sun in cape town, but I wouldn't go in December as it's heaving with tourists and gets very windy, from personal experience.

About 10-12 degrees centigrade daytime on the Greek mainland in December. Brits walk around in light jackets while locals dress like they are following Edmund Hillary up Everest.

Might be worth considering Cyprus rather than Greece as a few degrees warmer in winter. Either there or canaries.

Syros at the moment twenty plus degrees, beautifully sunny. Swimming in the sea today then Ellas Syrou playing Athens Kallithea (Super League last season) on Sunday with Olympiakos first team at home a week on Wednesday.

I agree the light is wonderful. January to March tend to be the cold months. From mid November on it is a bit of a lottery but rarely need heating at night.

Interesting, was always lead to believe tourism on the islands shut down in winter and the summer staff returned to Athens for the winter, making Athens itself a lively winter destination?

That’s true. Syros is slightly different in that the main town Ermoupoli is pretty lively all year round, as it’s the administrative centre of the Cyclades. But outside the main town, only a few restaurants are open.

After a chat with a travel agent, we have ruled out Cape Verde after he advised not leaving the hotel complex. **** that !!

So we have booked Puerto Morgan in Gran Canaria, known as Little Venice for all its canals. It looks stunning, have any of you visited there?

Just for the day from up the coast at Puerto Rico, nice place with no high rise buildings. It seemed a bit on the quieter side.

You'll be having late nights wondering where they are, who they're with and why they're not back yet :emoticon-0102-bigsm

That’s strange. Someone I know had an apartment on one of the Cape Verde islands. Used to let it out. A few I know booked it for holidays. All said it was beautiful and the only complaint was that it was a bit quiet. Being a Portuguese territory it is over 81% Christians and only just over 1% Muslim so there is no religious strife and unless it has altered no undocumented illegals mugging and bothering people as it isn’t the easiest place to get to.

That's useful to know. So as long as there's a low percentage of Muslims in a locality, and 'no undocumented illegals' we can rest easy that we will be safe. Or is it a case of you shoehorning your politics into a reply which could have ended after the penultimate sentence?
