United hunting a team to beat Barcelona, but can they even hold off City challenge? Opposition focus
Fri 16th Dec 2011 22:52 by Clive Whittingham

Man Utd’s nightmare boardroom situation means that while Alex Ferguson is trying to assemble a young team to conquer Barcelona, he’s in danger of losing out on the home front to the “noisy neighbours.”

Regardless of this forthcoming result Man United are in the twilight it seems
It may take a lot of adjustment to those who support the global monster ... Oh the stereotypes ... Many TV fans will simple change from red to blue it is predicted

I'm expecting a tough game. I saw quite a bit of QPR's match against Man City and they really should have got at least a point.

When you look at this Utd team compared to the great teams they had over the last 20 years, i thinks its obvious to all that they just dont have the strength in depth any more. They have sold some great players and replaced them with average ones. This Utd team (who will prob win) would not scare me at all. I think there midfield players are shocking (by Utds high standards). I genuinely believe that they just don't have the money to buy top players anymore. They won't be within 10Pts of city by the end of the year and if Chelsea or Arsenal get their act together this Utd team might not even finish in the top 3. I am not having a go at Utd fans, i think in the last 20 years they have set the standard that all other teams had to try to reach. But this team and squad is not good enough and Utd need several new top players to stay at the top.
All that said, they are still way way ahead of us.

It's a young team that will only get better over the years. We were far far far far worse in 2005, the season we finished bottom of our Champions League Group, and what followed not long after was 4 league titles in 5 seasons and 3 Champions League Finals in 4 seasons.

I'm sorry but there is no way Arsenal's one man band will finish above Man Utd. They are the worst Arsenal side I have seen under Wenger but they keep winning because of Van Persie.

Chelsea don't look anywhere near as strong as they used to either.

The problem is, that was 6 years ago and with the exception of Chelsea, Utd still dominated the transfer market. Utd could still pretty much buy who they wanted and all top players who came to play in the Prem only wanted to play for Utd. Things have changed mate. Utd just can't compete with Chelsea and now City. City are buying their way to the title and will improve their team and squad in every transfer window. Utd will fall behind unless they find a way to compete with city in the transfer market (which they can't). Utd always had a core of 6-7 top top players. It's only my opinion of course, but i dont think you have that core of top top players anymore. At most Utd now only have 1-2 world class players. Take a look at that city team.

I disagree. We have very rarely bought top class established players. We normally buy players who aren't so well know but we make them into top players and get them to fit our team.

Back in 2005 Chelsea had their bottomless pit of money while we were a shamble of our former selves, far worse than we are now, and yet we still recovered winning 4 titles in 5 seasons.

I think we will finish 2nd this season and hopefully strengthen from there.

We desperately need a couple of midfielders!

We will agree to disagree on the first point but i agree with your comment on your midfielders. You need a creative CM and a solid DCM. Your midfield looks lightweight and until its sorted you won't compete in Europe and the Prem. 2-3 top midfielders and you will be a major force again. (and a replacement for Ferdinand)
Take it handy on us tomorrow, we are still finding our way in the Prem.

Other than our midfield I think we have a very good team, though a bit inexperienced in some areas.

I think Jones can do a good job in midfield, he's a cracking player, but we do need a creative midfielder too. Cleverley was looking impressive at the start of the season but he keeps getting injured. In fact, we seem to have had a lot of bad luck with injuries this season (but I'm not going to an Arsenal and claim we'd have won every game 10 0 if it wasn't for injuries).

    QPR v Man Utd, 12:00

Manchester United hope to continue their unbeaten run in the Premier League with a win at Queens Park Rangers this Sunday.

The Red Devils have not been beaten in the league since their 6-1 home hammering at the hands of Manchester City in October.

Since then, Sir Alex Ferguson's side have won all but one of their games, both home and away, with Newcastle the only side able to take points off the champions.

After Manchester City's defeat to Chelsea last week, Manchester United managed to close the gap at the top of the table to just two points.

Indeed, the Old Trafford outfit would move up to first position with a win this weekend, if Roberto Mancini's side lose at home to Arsenal.

And with Tottenham, Chelsea and the Gunners closing in on the top two, the Premier League title race could be wide open going into the New Year.

    Relegation concerns

For QPR, they have relegation concerns to dismiss and have to improve on their form which has seen just two wins in the last 10 games.

Their only home win this season came against United's title rivals Chelsea, who were reduced to nine men on that particular occasion.

Such is the competitiveness of the Premier League this term, Neil Warnock's side could drop four places with a defeat this weekend, while a win could also lift them four places and back into the top half of the table.

It is a difficult festive fixture list for the Hoops, who also face Arsenal on New Year's Eve after meetings with Sunderland and Swansea City.

Sir Alex Ferguson has often pointed to his optimism over how his side will cope in the second half of the season and they have a winnable fixture list for the remainder of 2011.

13th-placed QPR are the highest placed team they face in the next two weeks, with Fulham, Wigan and Blackburn also on the agenda.

    Team news

Darren Fletcher has become the latest player added to Manchester United's absentee list, after it was confirmed that the midfielder is taking an extensive break due to suffering from ulcerative colitis.

However, it was also confirmed that Dimitar Berbatov is available for the game at Loftus Road and will therefore provide extra attacking options.

Long term injury-victims including Tom Cleverley, Nemanja Vidic, Javier Hernandez, Anderson and Michael Owen continue to miss out.

Anton Ferdinand is a doubt for Sunday's clash, as the defender limped off in QPR's 1-0 defeat to Liverpool last weekend.

Matt Connolly and DJ Campbell could both feature after being involved for the reserves in midweek.

    Possible Starting XIs:

QPR: Cerny, Gabbidon, Ferdinand, Young, Traore, Wright-Phillips, Barton, Faurlin, Smith, Bothroyd, Mackie.

Manchester United: De Gea, Smalling, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra, Valencia, Jones, Carrick, Nani, Rooney, Welbeck.
