I have a fair mix of 80s on my ipod. 80s music seems to have been having a renaissance over the last few years with the generation born after said music was popular. The music seems to get played a lot on nights out and there were some very talented artists from a mix of genres, The Smiths, Tears for Fears, Bon Jovi, Guns N Roses, Ultravox, Pet Shop Boys, A-Ha, I could go on! Comapred to the X Factor, generic pop we have today I guess people look back and appreciate proper music!
Yeah I think so. There was some really original stuff in the 80s, and not just synth style stuff. You mentioned The Smiths, completely brilliant. Another top 5 for me. One thing that frustrated me lately was that cretin Susan Boyle on some show (dunno what) doing a re-worked ballad cover of Depeche Mode's 'Enjoy The Silence' complete with lights coming on at the chorus, Westlife style, and arms aloft in the air. Slowed down to ****. Hated it. Against everything the original song stood for.
my top 10 favourites of all time 1. The Doors 2. Oasis 3. The Grateful Dead 4. REM 5. Joy Division 6. The Who 7. The Beatles 8. Queens of the Stone Age 9. The Libertines 10. Love Best I've seen live Top 5: 1. Iggy & The Stooges 2. The Kills 3. The Black Lips 4. The Buzzcocks 5. The Real People
The clear outstanding talent of this group is undoubtedly The Smiths - the mix of Morrisey's fanstastic lyrics with Johnny Marr's guitar, I'd then say Guns n Roses for thir exciting hedonistic, drug-fuelled energy.. The Pet Shop Boys were one of the better 80s bands - more inventive and witty but the 80s were generally **** apart from said Smiths, Housemartins, early Simple Minds, Queen.. etc. Bon Jovi is very standard, doesn't have GNR's danger, Tears for Fears apart from one great track don't merit a lot and what the hell do you see in A-Ha??
I've also seen Arcade Fire live in Lyon - massive crowd & venue.. two drum kits?? how many musicians?? impressive stuff, but the gigs which I personally remember the best are smaller venues, more intimate.. Of my top 10 I've only seen Oasis live, just before they split up.. not a "great" gig but "glad I saw them" thing.. QOTSA is on my hit list.. is there a better opening track than "Regular John"??
Arcade Fire are class. Saw them a few times at various gigs. Went to Rock en Seine two summers ago and they headlined but the heavy rain caused the gig to stop. If you like them check Bowie live with Arcade Fire and their cover of Still Ill by the Smiths.
Totally amazing song. I may love 'Avon' possibly even more (song after) as when it kicks into the riff, it's just ****ing awsome. Queens for me, first 3 albums incredible, the last two, just not the same. Rated R is my favourite. The song 'In The Fade' is probably my favourite Queens song.
Yap Rated R is the best IMO too.. Better Living Through Chemistry.. more than a song.. Songs for the Deaf is a great concept album for me, a trip with the radio on, turning station to station.. I need a saga, here's a saga.. it's songs for the deaf.. you can't even hear it! then another great opening track.. that riff.. uhhh
For anybody into garage rock check out a band called White Denim. Genuinely the tightest live band I have ever seen. Most well known for the song from the Persil and Channel 4 ad.
Yeah, never actually thought of it as a concept album actually. Though now you've said it, it obviously is. A great album for sure. Much of a fan of Kyuss?
I know Shake Shake Shake which I love, but that's it really. That's on the ad innit? I stress I heard it before the ad!!!
I have a wide range of music tastes from Bon Jovi, Nickelback and Black Stone Cherry to Bryan Adams, Michael Buble, Paulo Nutini and Akon. Saw Bon Jovi at Wembley(last concert at the old Wembley) which was brilliant, but the best gig i went to was Nickelback supported by Black Stone Cherry at Sheffield Arena. Oh and when Bon Jovi came to the KC Stadium, i won passess to be able to stand on the side of the stage during the concert, it was awesome being able to see Richie Sambora that close!
I'm gonna check out more of their stuff. I love really raw music, and to me that's what it sounds like. A Persil advert is gonna be a true reflection of the band I'm sure!
