A Celtic supporter with a history of football-related disorder has been jailed after violently attacking police officers and three police horses during serious clashes ahead of a Scottish Cup match. Kevin McGuire, 36, was part of a group of aggressive fans who confronted police outside the stadium before Celtic’s tie against Airdrie. The confrontation quickly escalated, with officers and mounted units targeted as they attempted to contain the disorder.

During the melee, McGuire was seen repeatedly punching three police horses while also assaulting two officers. Despite claiming in court that he had simply been an “innocent bystander” caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, the Sheriff rejected his explanation entirely. Sheriff John McCormick told him he was “in fact one of the ringleaders of this mob,” pointing to both his behaviour on the day and his well-documented history of violence linked to football.

The court heard that McGuire had previously been banned from attending any football ground in the UK and was already on bail for other offences at the time of the incident. His conduct on the day was described as aggressive, deliberate and prolonged, contributing significantly to the disorder that police were struggling to bring under control.

McGuire was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to the three police horses, assaulting two police officers, and acting in a threatening and abusive manner. Alongside his 10-month jail term, he has been handed a further five-year ban from every football stadium in the UK, reflecting the seriousness of his actions and the threat he posed to public order.
