I wonder why no political party have done these seemingly simple things. I suspect it is because the long term risk to economic prosperity could be disastrous.

The idea of taxing wealth in isolation to me makes little sense. And it would be an accountants field day getting folk beneath the threshold. What I think is really needed is to attract uber wealthy folk to the UK and give them huge incentives to invest to create wealth. We can tax profits in the usual way, get more people in employment and earn more income tax. The uber wealthy can pay tax on profits but at a rate proportionate to how much wealth they have created for the economy. That way we lessen our borrowing which is vital and we generate productivity and income. Win win as they say.

But it requires accepting that some will always be more wealthy than the majority. It will be move the needle though on making folk more able to earn a good wage for a good lifestyle.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and they will always eat. We need to be highly attractive to folk wanting to build companies in this country. We are at the moment seen as unwelcoming.

The uber wealthy's wealth is outgrowing the economy and that is a disaster because it means they put buy the rest of the economy and drive up prices and lock normal people out.

The wealth isn't trickling down, it's trickling up. That's why they are uber wealthy. Because they create wealth for themselves. Not others.
The last thing the western world needs is more uber rich to suck the air out of the room and drive prices up as they currently do. The good news is that trickle down economics was widely debunked by academics and economists years ago and eventually that will filter into the public.

Teaching a man to fish is great. But when the Uber rich owns the fishing rods and the fish and the rivers and lakes... Well the proverb falls over.

 

Then we pay tax on the fish and others avoid paying it because they have clever accountants. Some don’t have any fish and their kids go hungry.

 

Take an example. Jim Ratcliffe. He is worth billions. Took himself off to Monaco at one point.

Now his wealth is probably valed at billions overall. So we tax that, or try to. What do you think happens? Just pays up and keeps working? He might as well sell up. His wealth is made up of the companies he has build like Ineos. Sells up and thousands of jobs now at risk. You get a short term income boost but then lose out on tax going forward (income and corporation) and you increase the welfare bill.

This is the calculation you have to make. And I suspect is why no political party implements such policies on a large scale.

Over the years people like Ratcliffe have created significant wealth for the country. They have created plenty for themselves too. If we are going to start a more punishing tax regime on people who invest here and create jobs and wealth here then they will go elsewhere. Or they will lose their appetite to create wealth in the country and retire to Monaco at 40.

 

As above. The uber wealthy's wealth is outgrowing the economy. Because they take wealth for themselves rather than creating it for others that's why they are richer than ever and own more of the world than ever. That's because the common person creates their wealth, not the other way around.

Arguably the 3rd best excuse to tax arrogantly rich arseholes I can think of. Cares for tax avoidance more than the planet.

 

Sorry to intrude but the poster Sunders53 is right, sadly you have to game the system. It's better in my area now for GP appointments, hospital and other stuff, as at the local end of things there has been some mass changes - but prior to that if I couldn't get an appointment the same day, I would fill in the online consultation, because for me I found it gets you immediate attention. The important part in it is reflecting how long you have had the condition without treatment, because that puts more haste into getting attention... just be ready though to take a call and an appointment at the drop of the hat. I think the actual set response time is something like 48-72hrs. I have dry eye, but NHS don't give prescriptions for that anymore, unless you can't afford to buy - the reason I mention that last bit is because I saw the question asked on here (rooch 3). If it was that condition warm wet presses on it would help, the actual drops for it is Carbomer 0.2% but don't just suffer. Good recommendation by RTB as well, regarding seeing a pharmacist.
