Apologies if this thread or a similar one has been done before. I would guess it might have been.

Anyway, Friday night after a long week, just got some music & beers to chill right the **** out with. Wondering, what are people's favourite bands or artists?

I'm one of those people who likes to have a favourite and hold them in a ridiculously high regard. I could make an exhaustive list I suppose (but I won't!), but felt I'd like to find out people's tastes. See if there's much correlation between us lot, or none whatsoever.

For the record and the purposes of this thread, my favourite band is Pixies. Love 'em.

Let us know yours if you're into your music.

I love a bit of music chat me...

I like all sorts, as a kid liked metal bands, went to see Iron Maiden at Hull City Hall in 1990. Now my favourite singer is PJ Harvey and I mostly listen to older trance/techno tunes but have got an open mind about everything

Without a doubt PJ Harvey would be in my top 5. That's warmed my heart to hear!

I too am a former metal head. I still cling on to some of it, but have discarded the majority as being a bit, well, silly. Ozzfest was my summer pilgrimage!

You are right, a lot of it is pretty daft but when it's tongue-in cheek I don't mind so much even now. I love PJ Harvey she is unique, its just a shame so many people dont even know who she is

Yuh totally, she's been more or less faultless from album to album. The latest one, one of her best and most groundbreaking to date. She's a one off. I like how she rarely speaks publicly, just pops up with new music every few years. Music and integrity over style.

I have to say I still love a bit of Slayer (seen 'em live too) and, like you say, Maiden. I was a teenager through the 'Nu-Metal' age...so unfortunately I picked a lot of that up, but managed to realise the proper bands as I got older!

I have some pretty extreme stuff in my CD collection I don't really touch anymore...it's unlistenable really.

i have a massively wide taste right back from the sixties to the current day ( even tho not so many after the nineties) , the likes of The Hollies, Roy Orbison and Bobby Vee all have a place in my record collection...... but Oasis are my favourite band, some of there b sides and lesser known stuff is Brilliant

also love the The Beatles, and Bon Jovi and Keane are among my favourites, always get the piss taken out of me for that last one <laugh>, but ive seen them live 5 times and think they are quality.

I also like a huge range of bands and singers but if I had to choose my absolute favourite it would be John Martyn.

    Ha Keane! Sorry...

I reckon a lot of people will say Oasis. It's not really for me, though I understand the huge impact and relevance they have.

Out of interest, do you think they're better than the Beatles?

Yuh understand. Is Noel's solo album good?

I have friends who love Oasis and reckon it's great. As I say, never really my thing. To me, the Noel stuff sounds same old...but maybe I'm being ignorant?

its good, but it is just like an album of oasis songs he could sing, but i suppose as he was the main songwriter , that was always going to be the case....i would have much preferred them stay together, they are much stronger together, even tho i doubht either would admit it.

My overall greatest group is the Beatles, and their song writing trio wrote classics that have stood the test of time. But that doesn't preclude a wide range of artists that I listen too from Bobby Vee, Brian Hyland, James Taylor and Cliff Richard through to Dido, Eva Cassidy, and Celine Dion. But one guy I think has been neglected in recognition as both a performer and songwriter, in fact his song writing is nothing short of phenomenal. Step forward Mr Ray Davis of The Kinks.

A mix really. Like modern stuff from the last 10 years or so (Muse, Pendulum etc none of this pop bull ****!) Then a mix of older stuff from 90s back to the 60s - Oasis, Beatles, most 80s music, the list goes on!
