I think I remember Chris Coleman commentating the odd Spurs game, was always very positive towards us. Said a lot of things many of us fans said, such as how IF Ledley stayed fit, he'd be a regular in the England squad and arguably England's best CB. Always used to say how the attacking side of things, when at its best, was a joy to watch.
Our comedic tastes do change as we grow older. I can remember, as a pre-teen, finding Jim "nick nick" Davidson very funny, but when I saw him on TV after I had graduated from University, I had to turn the TV off, as I found him so incredibly tedious and embarrassing.
I've actually given up listening to the English commentators when Spurs play.I can listen in Spanish or English and the Spanish love Spurs, love the way we play and are genuinely amazed at our passing at pace. It's so nice to hear people getting really excited about us.Although the spanish commentators to get over-excited anyway. GOLGOLGOLGOLGOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL.
The thing that I hate about Beglin is that he'll try to say that something has happened when it clearly hasn't. He seems to think that he can influence reality by lying about what's unfolding in front of him, for some reason. His descriptions of some of Liverpool's games have often walked a fine line between farce and satire.
Nice to hear it PBH, I was absolutely astounded at the way w played at Hearts, and in some of the games since. It's a completely different level (upwards) to what we've ever played before, and that includes our previous title teams. I would love to be able to understand Spanish and listen to commentators who appreciate the beautiful game. I assume they don't think much of Stoke? I love the excitement different cultures bring to football, I remember in the 60s/70s first hearing those Brazilian commentators going delirious over a goal - I loved it - so much more fun that our commentators at the time 'and it's there there, that's 1-0 to Spurs, Greaves the scorer.' Mind you too much of the over-egging would ruin the commentary pudding I guess
A mate of mine moved to California a couple of months back, and he will look for the game being aired with Spanish commentary, rather than spend 90 minutes trying nopt to eat the couch in frustration at how bad Fox Sports or ESPN's commentary is. At tyimes last summer, it seemed as if Lawrenson was hell-bent on ruining every World Cup match he commentated on that didn't feature England, or even games where none of the players were based in the Premier League. Also, one day commentators will realise it isn't the 70's anymore. If they actually watched the games, they'd notice that... * Italy don't employ catenaccio * Germany aren't a team that grind the opponents down over 90 minutes * Holland are as far from Total Football as UFC (but UFC is prettier to watch...) * The teams most likely to resort to diving the most are Brazil, France, Holland - and England
Let's just say they weren't happy with the ref at the Stoke game. Most spanish and hispanic get very excited about football. When a goal is scored i used to time the GOL part and i think an Argentinian holds my personal record of over 1min.
Pat Nevin comes across a bit too camp for me.....i prefer Stan 'smashed Ulrika in more ways than one' Collymore
To me, it's either funny - or it's not. Most of Davidson's stuff just wasn't funny, full stop - whether you agreed with his, obviously racist, themes, or not. Some while ago, now, they came up with "alternative comedy", I used to think, alternative to what? - being funny? Anyway, TV nowadays, is virtually a comedy free zone, unless you turn on UK Gold. Whether that's entirely to do with the fact that it's now forbidden to take the piss out of almost anybody, or anything - I don't know. I suspect it's quite a large part of it, though.
If you are the butt of that joke then you might not find it very funny....i know i wouldnt piss my pants laughing at some dickhead like Jim Davidson or Chubby Brown mocking my heritage, culture and parentage........even if it was in the name of 'comedy' whatever that means....people are just not intelligently funny nowadays thats why they have to resort to abusing with a smile on thier face.....for the pilligers to have a laugh
Strangely i don't find Collymore that bad. I can't really say he adds anything that no-one else could but he's nowhere near as bad as i thought he would be. Ghoddle - I'm glad you seem to have cheered up a bit. Yay
I think I've already stated that IMO, Davison was just not funny. However, I think the intolerance to any form of joke about race, religion, or sexuality, has just gone too far. I realise that people's sense of humour differs - But, to use an example, Richard Prior for instance, used to make, what would be considered nowadays, highly racist comments about white people in his stand up act. It didn't bother me, nor most of the white people I knew, because Prior was funny.
The thing that annoys me most about wilkins is the way he says "well done young man" in the most boring and condescending voice imaginable
i get exactly what you mean NSS........i can take humuor personally aimed at me but the likes of Davison etc just ooozed bigotry....or maybe he just looks like a ****!
I never found Jim Davidson funny - not because of his material, but the fact he has no real comic ability, and comes across as an obnoxious arse.
