Any thoughts on whether the Badger Beers Chase day should go ahead with the chase course good-firm, good in places?

Wincanton officials must be sick about the turnout for their card today- 4-8 runners in all races.
The Badger Beers Chase is usually a competitive event, but today it looks like Keir Starmer organised it.

I don't think it should be cancelled as it would be unfair to trainers/owners whose horses are better on a sound/fast surface

Horses with the conformation to handle it well will be OK and will probably bring about an improved performance. Hopefully trainers won't run any horses whose conformation won't handle it

Sorry I disagree, in the middle of the NH season we shouldn’t be racing on ground that has firm in the description. They should have canned the meeting earlier in the week and moved it elsewhere.

I don't feel strongly enough one way or the other so happily to accept your view. I don't have my advisors with me so I could be talking rubbish. I do know though that horses suited to heavy ground (high knee action) should definitely not be running as they would be pounding their legs into the ground and, as the shortest distance is 2 miles, likely to cause injury if ground too firm. Horses with a long sloping (well laid) shoulder will cope better as they are more likely to glide across the ground. Another factor is how well the track is maintained. A long covering of grass will cushion on landing but if there are divots and there is no give then no horse should be jumping

If I recall correctly, the GN has been run on firm ground and nobody on here complained (that not being an argument one way nor the other)

I will stick to my view though that any trainer worth his/her salt should know whether or not it is in the horse's interest to run, whatever the ground conditions; there have been some disasters where trainers didn't pull their horse out, but I won't mention any names
