Kieron Dyer is set to undergo a foot operation on Monday after he limped out of Tuesday's Reserve match against Tottenham in the opening minutes. Dyer, 32, suffered the original injury on his debut against Bolton on the opening day of the campaign, but seemed close to making himself available for selection after a four-month spell on the sidelines. QPR Manager Neil Warnock told www.qpr.co.uk: "This is a devastating blow for Kieron. "I have never met a more determined pro in my career, and he really doesn't deserve this. "The specialist said he thought Kieron could return before Christmas without the need for an operation and is disappointed that this is not the case, and he has no alternative now but to operate. "I have absolutely no doubt that he will recover after the operation. We are going to support him as best we can because he has got such a contribution to make, both on and off the field. "And even though he has not featured for us, he has made a vital contribution at the training ground and has been very important to have around the place." With Warnock set to name his 25-man squad for the rest of the season at the end of January, the gaffer admitted: "We are aware that Kieron's contract can be terminated in January. "But, having spoke to Tony Fernandes and the rest of the shareholders, we want to support Kieron in this time, even though it may mean he is not in our 25 for the rest of the season. "I feel he has a lot to offer the Club. We will be involving him in many aspects of the Club while he rehabilitates."
Given that most clubs would ditch a player with history like Dyer in January, it says a lot for the club that they are supporting him and are keeping him on (even in a non-squad role) whilst he rehabilitates. We love QPR because it's a family club, because it does the right things, and because it always looks after its own. That went missing under Beccles and Flabio, so I really can't understand why people are whinging so much when some of these values resurface under Tony. It's almost like some people want the old owners back!
Come on Rangers, a bit of compassion please. The guy was devastated when he was stretchered off. We can be business like in knowing that he has to go but we can do it with kindness! Does anyone really believe he is happy to be injured?! Presumably the shortest career ever in Hoops??
We all joked about it but it's not really funny. I think the man should retire. I can't believe it and I feel very sorry for the man. Good luck to him.
Warnock has to be pragmatic and face reality that Dyer is never going to feature sufficiently to be worth even a place on the bench. Even if he gets fit again, how could you possibly contemplate risking him on the PL stage? Cut your losses, Neil, so to speak.
Unfortunately looks like you could be right awjm, i think it's time he stopped putting his body through the mill. Pity, he could have offered us so much if he had stayed fit.
In a way it was almost a relief to read that it was Dyer out for the season and not say Ali or HH or paddy for example, have to feel for the lad because he had looked sharp in pre-season and had high hopes. I believe that he should retire before he does some permanent damage.
Such a shame. I can remember him as a young lad playing right back for england at the old wembley, a fully fit, focused dyer is such a class act. Shame he will never revisit those days again.
Well, well. Dyer's exclusion from the squad improves my chances of getting a look in. Just gotta work on my fitness now. Been after that 16,998 shirt for ages!
Really good Guy he has got for a Manager in Neil - he has written in his weekly column in the Independent, that he still thinks he can make an impact when he is fit! Not before next season apparently.
