Steve Bruce had a good amount in his time at Newcastle also and the general consensus was that Newcastle should be doing better because of it. Ultimately results vs spend are not great so far this season and it could tip either way over the next month, so we have to wait and see. Unfortunately once people start getting into numbers it's becomes an argument about accuracy and that's not really the point being made anyway.
Fair play to Brighton, deserved the win and I said earlier in the week, if our midfield 3 could cope with theirs we’d win, they didn’t but credit to Hutzler as he clearly worked on pressing our middle three, gave them no time and then popped the ball around nicely taking 2/3 players out the game when they won it back. Our worse performance of the season by some distance yesterday, good opportunity to put it right mid week in the CL.
It's generally clear and straightforward when people talk about numbers. However in our unique case we have GG who wants to argue that paying £55m for Anthony Elanga today is the biggest waste of money of all time based on comparisons to the non-inflation adjusted prices of players we bought 30 years ago. He also wants to say we've spent £680m and can't beat Brighton, when said figure includes amounts for players who have been sold for vast money by us since and weren't on the pitch.
It is easy to forget how good Brighton are. I think a Roland said this Yesterday, but the rules have allowed clubs chasing to big 6 to squeeze that middle order into a very tough battle. Essentially the big 6 hold a massive financial advantage over Newcastle, but Newcastle hold a very narrow financial advantage over the rest of the chasing pack.
Tbf Elanga does look a bad buy at that price and we have spent a lot of money... Net spend is debatable and not really relevant.. Spend is spend. GG reacted badly though for sure.
I see someone has been up early today spreading their repetitive **** like a farmer in planting season…
I don't think many people forget this tbh, I think they're widely viewed as an exceptionally well run club, in terms of managers signings, player signings and selling players for huge profits. They constantly find a way to keep progressing despite losing managers and having to sell key players. Hence they've always been a very solid Prem team since they got promoted, and no team in the Prem is going to view an away game at Brighton as an easy win....GG seems to have forgotten that Brighton beat City at the Amex earlier in the season. Likewise trying to belittle Welbeck is equally stupid, as he's clearly had a huge renaissance and is a key player in a very solid team. Thinking we should be easily beating Brighton at their place is just arrogant and massively ignorant of what Brighton have been doing for the last 8 years. We weren't favourites for that game.
So If people predict a loss they get argued against and told they need faith and if people are confident they're arrogant. This board is actually impossible
It seems playing Brighton always fries GG's circuits, this was from when we played them March in the FA Cup, and it caused GG's venom for Howe to grow so much he started getting annoyed about how boring Howe's middle names were. Howe then won us our first trophy in 70 years 14 days later:
I think GG has gone in on Howe early, but he could end up being a pioneer. I'm not sure which way this is going to go, but it's definitely a little soon to make a drastic claim either way. The next month is probably going to yield some good results.
Weirdly I think GG actually predicted a win on this, by about 20 minutes we were going to lose, by half time the season had been written off, then Howe was useless, Elanga was the biggest waste of month in history and whatever else....with a weird 5 minutes where a good but hardly unusual back heel from Woltermade was being spaffed over like it had just won the Puskas award.
What's everyone's thoughts on Ramsey? I thought we looked massively improved with him on the pitch. Actually we looked quite good and I think him and Guimareas worked well together.
I’m a big fan of the Ramsey signing, I probably knew **** all about him before we signed him… but I love the way he looks with a ball at his feet, he’s tidy, composed, looks for a creative pass and seems very confident of his ability. He seems a very good signing, and yes I thought yesterday he did ‘up’ our game. he’s definitely not the biggest waste of money in the history football
I agree. Thought he looked good. So far summer signings are looking very tidy with the exception of Elanga. Too early to say one way or another on Ramsdale but pope’s really starting to do my tits in and has been for quite some time.
Yeah I was on x last night and one or to youtube channels and there was quite a few saying he did nothing, but it was clear to me he's more than good enough to get in our side. I don't know what some of these guys are watching sometimes. He looked sharp and we got at them a bit via him.
Elanga looks like he's incapable... I've never seen a player forget the ball. I'm going early, but I don't think they'll get anywhere with him.
I have a feeling he may be better with Wissa. There’s times when he gets the space to open the burners but quickly realises there’s nobody there and stops.
He can't get any worse.. I'm not even joking, but I think obertan, marvuex, max, almiron and fabrice Pancrates had more ability in their skillset
