Image: Christian slaves from Europe, on sale in a slave market in Algiers. In total aprox 1.5 million Europeans were enslaved by Arabs but as this spanned 1,300 years it could be a far higher number.

Historically, the top Arab nations involved in the slave trade include Morocco, Egypt, and the regions of the Ottoman Empire, particularly Algeria. These areas were central to the Arab slave trade, which spanned over 1,300 years and involved the capture and sale of tens of millions of Africans.

Modern slavery still exists in many Arab nations, often in the form of forced labour and exploitation of migrant workers under systems like the kafala system. Despite official abolition of traditional slavery, practices resembling slavery persist, particularly affecting vulnerable populations.

Current education in British and indeed in the public arena is so lacking in many aspects of British history. Important events such as the Arab slave trade in Europe, in the British Isles and across Africa have been side-lined for left wing political reasons.

As a Brit who worked in Africa, it's all too true that Europeans are simply viewed as colonisers and slavers, ignoring the Africans own part in both owning and selling slaves, and also completely blanking the Arab slave trade which far surpassed the European one in both period of time and numbers.

Slavery continues to this day. Although in the 19C and very early 20C Britain spend a great deal of energy ending the trans-Atlantic slave trade, slavery in East and West Africa in the Sudan, and in other parts of the world. Despite the tens of thousands of years of slavery, and the involvement of every ethnic and racial group on Earth in slavery... It's odd that Britain and the Western world has decided to focus one dimensionally on just one aspect!

I see the Telegraph is warning Reeves is thinking of introducing National I surance deductions for pensioners.

sounds fair to me, never understood why being retired meant you don’t pay a penny for your NHS care etc - especially as we oldies consume the most NHS resources.

    glad we all voted Labour.

I’m mega rich. I go private but don’t use those ridiculous BUPA-like ‘insurance’ schemes the aspiring middle classes comfort themselves with. True champagne socialist, maybe, though I prefer a nice drop of Amarone.
