QPR poll: Vote for the Player of the Year for 2011

Ian Cooper, QPR correspondent Thursday, December 15, 2011
    12:16 PM

Who has been the brightest star for QPR in the last 12 months?

QPR’s return to the top flight of English football after a 15-year absence has made 2011 a landmark year in the club’s history – but who has earned the title of Super Hoops’ Player of the Year?

Rangers’ promotion from the Championship last season was underpinned by outstanding performances from front to back, and the first five months of Premier League life has drawn some similarly exceptional displays – sometimes from some unexpected quarters.

Few could argue that QPR would be where they are now without a top-quality man in goal, and in PADDY KENNY Rangers have one of the most reliable keepers in the Premier League.

Kenny featured in 44 of QPR’s 46 games as they marched to the Championship title last season, keeping 24 clean sheets in the process, and he has been in equally impressive form this campaign.

Then there’s SHAUN DERRY, the man who was written off by Neil Warnock in the past. Derry stamped his authority on the midfield after following his manager to QPR from Crystal Palace in 2010.

Emphatically answering those who suggested that ‘his legs have gone’, Derry has played in 12 of QPR’s 16 matches so far this season. He may have lost his place in midfield to Joey Barton in recent weeks, but Derry has already played a huge part in the club’s recent success.

Derry played much of last season alongside ALEJANDRO FAURLIN, the Argentine who admitted recently he might have considered ending it all had QPR been denied promotion over the controversy surrounding the ownership of his contract and the resulting court case.

Faurlin’s conduct during that emotional few weeks for the club were first-class. His performances never faltered, if anything improving, and he is now reaping the rewards.

It would have been an injustice had Faurlin missed out on the Premier League, and it says much for his recent displays that there are rumours of a £17 million price tag on the South American.

Of course, in the Premier League goals pay the bills, and in that department HEIDAR HELGUSON has emerged as an unlikely hero this season.

The Iceland international sealed his place in QPR folklore by scoring the winner against arch-rivals Chelsea back in October, and has also netted important goals in the win at Stoke, and in the games against Blackburn Rovers, West Bromwich Albion and Manchester City.

Without his contribution, QPR’s current mid-table position would be looking far less healthy.

And then we come to ADEL TAARABT, the player whose poor displays this season and occasionally petulant attitude have seen him lose his place in the first team, and who may not even be at the club after January.

But for all his misgivings, Taarabt’s form last season was breathtaking. Nineteen goals in all competitions- and plenty of assists – it was his opener against Watford at Vicarage Road in the penultimate game of the season which paved the way for the win which sealed the Championship.

So often the quality of his goals were to be marvelled at, Taarabt was the undoubtedly the inspiration behind QPR’s return to the Premier League.

But was that contribution enough to warrant him the title of Player of the Year, or does the accolade go to one of his team-mates, who continue to keep QPR fighting to stay in the Premier League? Follow me on Twitter @QPRTimes

Obviously, if it was just last season, it would be Adel by a country mile!! But as it's all of this year, then I'll go for Paddy.

    Faurlin easily.

If we could vote for a half-season performance, I'd count in Taarabt possible, but he's done nothing since May. On that score, even Mackie's contributed more than Adel!

Difficult choice for me, but in view of his consistent good performances even against the backdrop of the investigation, I've gone for Ali. HH a very good number 2, Derry and Adel tied for number 3.

The lad Faurlin for me. You see, Willy and I can agree on something! (Even if he wouldn't accept my Olive Branch :emoticon-0149-no:)

I voted Helguson because no-one thought he would do anything in the Championship, and everyone wrote him off this year aswell, yet he's got goals and stopped missing so many sitters (except that one vs C*elsea).

Wouldn't he have seen all the replies and easily deduced the nature of the thread? Unless he can't see any of my threads in their entirety?

    Ah who cares. His problem.

Quite difficult to call, Taarabt played a major part in getting us where we are and so did Paddy.
For me after due consideration it's just Paddy for me, because he's carried the good form into the prem

Without Taarabt we wouldn't be in the Premiership so for me it has to be him even though I think Faurlin's the much better player.

    However I do love Heidar...
