They had far higher possession stats plus they hit the woodwork and got a penalty, both from open play, with twice our XG. But all this is to ignore my original point, which is that we struggle to get a hold of midfield and control possession which puts extra pressure on the defence. It was totally evident today with us spending most of the second half defending against a team at the bottom of the league. Maybe `Matazzo can be the glue that pulls it together but I don't have much faith in Amir or Gyabi being that player.I think this is a game where xG isn’t a fair reflection. 0.8 came from a stupid soft penalty and the rest probably came from that goal mouth scramble. The only other time they had any threat was with shots from range. All of their xG came from set pieces.
We got in behind their defence quite a lot of times and ****ed up the final ball, I would say we had a lot of very good chances to create a goal that would have registered 0 xG.
The rest is pretty meaningless really but we did have better possession stats.
