    I find mine comes around about the same time every year, near my birthday. Probably due to warmer sunnier weather where I drink more white wine and stronger lager, and richer food.

    Yes, right big toe twice this year. It's usually my left big toe, and left ankle. I had it for 5 days then it cleared up. 4/5 days later I was looking under the car, lying down on the pavement. When I pushed myself up bending my toes, the weakness must have still been there, and I suffered a further 6 miserable days. Must learn to stop going to excesses next birthday/summer <cheers>

    @Gordon Armstrong @Essayyeffcee @Huson92 @Rooch @WorkeyTicketFTM @safcyellowbelly

    Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. Bottom line – it’s up to me to get off my arse. Simples.

    Gordon, having someone alongside certainly helps. I’ve never done a single workout partner , but last long term gym had a great community which served that purpose. Essayyeffcee- when I got treadmill I got a 2nd hand tv for the wall. My deal with me was that if I wanted to watch ‘’ rubbish’’ tv , I had to ‘’pay’’ by doing it whilst walking. Also watched a lot of documentaries. After broken ankle I did min 10000 steps for 100 consecutive days (not all treadmill) but can be a pain if days been busy and you still need thousands at 9pm -- so then I did a year of 300.000 in the month, regardless o findividual daily amounts. Hudson92- yes , enjoyment vital- guess I got bored with the walking just described. Going to change the mindset from enjoyment of the ‘’what’’ to enjoyment of the ‘’ why’’ eg not having the shirt buttons straining, easier to get down to cut toe nails --- but importantly of course general health . Rooch- not often, every year I say ‘’ got to go to lakes more regularly’’ WorkyTicket -- I’m going to sign up for gym- as you say it’s a commitment and then nothing or no one can delay or put off the session. I find it better also when someone else writes up the workout so I just do it rather than have to think. safcyellowbelly-- had an idea to make routine automatic, for short activity to start progress – so ‘’multi habit’’ ( think it’s called something like that)- 10 mins on spin bike then brush teeth in morning, battle rope sticks every time whilst waiting for kettle to boil. etc So as Gordon mentioned – targets -- Xmas is 11 weeks – so I’ll go a stone by then, with a bit of muscle retrieved.

    Thanks again all -- having put this down – feel a good psychological step has been achieved !

    Well done mate. I'm a bit slow replying, but you're definitely on the right track. Gordon's right about having targets, but I'd also have to add that when you set a target, aim to give yourself a reward for doing it. It can be anything you want, recently I treated myself to a new pair of earbuds for hitting my recent swimming target, for example. It could be something specific, like that, or when you hit the target you think of something you want as a result and get it. I find it does help keep me motivated, especially when the weather isn't great and you're not feeling up to it.

    One of the things I did, but haven't for a while, was virtual walking challenges. The ones I did were through the Conqueror Challenges. There's an app where you sign up to which ever challenge or challenges you want an it records how far you walk towards your goal. You do have to pay for them, though, but if you sign up, when you complete it you get a pretty nice medal as a reward. Here's some the ones I've got. Screenshot_2025-10-04-13-45-55-24_99c04817c0de5652397fc8b56c3b3817.jpg There's various challenges of different lengths, from walking the length of the English channel, to covering Route 66 in America or walking the in Middle Earth along the route of the Fellowship Of The Ring (if you're a bit of a geek like me:emoticon-0100-smile). Knowing you'll get a reward for doing it really does help with your motivation and stops you from slipping back.
