They can't see how comments like that push more and more people away from the left. People look and see they are nothing like them, so look for the alternatives. It also makes people look at what the policies of the left actually are, and they tend to find they're changeable, and if they even exist at all, they are not what most people would ever vote for. They are recruiting sergeants for the very parties they clam to hate.
When Starmer specifically says that anyone born here or moves here is just as British or English as the British & English, but will also be treated as a protected class if they are muslims or black . They clearly are not the same as us. English is an ethnicity , the home secretary calls herself English but Pakistan will give her a Pakistani passport because she's ethnically a Pakistani & she can live in Pakistan in a majority muslim ethnically Pakistani country with 100 % Pakistani authorities & politicians.
