I’m sick of there being no other news story in the UK apart from immigration. We don’t actually have that many immigrants. Most of the those are here on student or work visas. The “boats” represent a relatively small number of people; many countries accept far greater numbers. Immigration has always happened. We have welcomed it in the past to fill gaps in the labour market. It will happen more frequently in the future because of conflicts around the world and global warming. Most migrants won’t find their way to the UK - or would want to. As usual, immigration is a vehicle for the racists and xenophobes to stir up hatred; it’s happened many times in the past and usually coincides with a rise in right wing propaganda, which occurs in prolonged periods of relative peace. When problems are at home, it’s easy for those who feel done down to blame the foreign bogeyman; it’s always been the way. So let’s blame them for taking our jobs - the ones that either don’t exist or we don’t want to do, even though the asylum seekers they demonise aren’t allowed to work Or let’s equate immigrants with child sex offenders because some allegation was made against one asylum seeker - even though there’s dozens of white British nonces living on the estate you come from Sick of it
