At the speed Rooney was travelling the only way McCarthy could have avoided him would have been to throw himself to the ground. But why should he have to? Rooney had no right to run straight through him and certainly no right to elbow him as he did. If you can't see that you don't just need glasses you need to grow up.
Look at the footage again. Rooney runs at McCarthy from the blind side and at speed. He could have avoided him with ease at any point with the slightest swerve, but no he runs straight for him. McCarthy catches sight of him out of the corner of his eye at the last moment, turns his head and leans towards the impact he knows is coming - a defensive stance anyone who has played rugby will recognise as bracing for impact. But Rooney the cowardly thug raises and elbow hitting him in the head and at the same time swerves and bypasses him, an act he could have taken at any time to avoid the incident completely. Face it Rooney is a thug who knew exactly what he was doing.

Firstly i am sorry that Vidic got injured and that it was a Newcastle player that caused it. I am also sorry that the referree didn't for whatever reason punish Martins for the incident as I agree that leading with the elbow when going in for headers is dangerous. However, can you prove that Jordan didn't bleat like a kid about this and complain that Martins should have been banned. My statement was aimed at him as he seems to believe that his teams players can act however they like and so long as they get away with it his team have secured some sort of victory. I don't like it when any player of any team gets injured through foul play and hate it even more when people like Jordan are so biased about it. If he wants to leave the future success of your club in the hands of referree's spotting, or otherwise, such petulant acts then he is a fool because on another day you would be without an important player for three or more games with an important run in to play. For that act alone he should be angry with Rooney and not blindly supporting his thuggish actions.
I think jordan, along with 99% of Utd fans, will admit that Rooney was lucky to get away with it. But the problem we have is when the media and other fans claim he is some sort of super thug and the rules must be changed to punish him (as MOTD were implying last night), when in reality a number of other players also lead with their elbow on occassion and also often escape punishment. Yes, he deserved to be sent off and banned, but referees make errors like this every week. But it's not right that he should get so much attention just because he has a high profile, has had issues in the past and cos he plays for Utd. And I'm not just saying this as a United fan - I thought the same when some Arsenal fans were complaining about Barton's tackle on Diaby based on Barton's past record.
No body notice the awful and very dangerous tackle on Evra then? No, well it was equally as bad as the Rooney one so I suggest a dose of delete your face is in order.
Fair play Swarbs this is the sort of intelligent response you hope to get on a football forum. I agree the media do have their chosen few such as Rooney and Barton who they single out for special and often impartial judgement and it would also be unfair for the FA to change any rules of precedent purely to ensure that Rooney is punished in this instance. The reason I have commented on this thread so many times is not because I have a problem with your club but because certain contributors were hellbent on arguing his innocence or were gloating at the fact that he was going to get away with it. I wish your club the best of luck for the rest of the season and genuinely hope that you win the title this year!
The only one I've seen arguing his innocence (and not very effectively) is vinnibinni. Even jordan agreed that his actions were disgraceful and stupid. But then there will always be a minority of fans of all clubs that are too blind to accept that what their players have done was wrong. I've seen Utd fans try to defend Keano for taking out Haaland, Liverpool fans defending Diouf for spitting at the fans, and even some City fans defending Barton when he attacked Dabo in training. And likewise, good luck to the Toon for the rest of the season.
