You might be right. But how often do we come away from games saying, "Wow, did you see that save Baz made?". It's not very often whereas I feel it happens all the time with most other keepers, even Macca. Baz made a good save against Wrexham, but I think it was blown up a bit because we were all desperate for him to do well.

I can't remember too many others (correct me if I'm wrong though - I didn't watch the Watford game etc)

The save against Wrexham was a great save. Anyone downplaying that is taking the piss. It was also huge in helping us get our only league win so far.

The problem is that we are so pathetic at the back that strikers have time to stick the ball where they like. He hasn’t been at fault for a single goal, nor has he had much to save. I would say I saw a couple of newspapers named him man of the match against Pompey - where he did play a very good game.

Didn't even cross my mind that he might be at fault while at the game. As I've said since the main issue for that goal was the lack of pressure on the ball imo.

Having watched the highlights today I do think another keeper might have done better but I certainly don't think it was a big error or really poor keeping or anything.

But then the issue with Baz has never been big mistakes, he actually very rarely makes those. The issue is he very rarely makes great saves either.

But for me, I'm not attributing any of Saturday's goals to him.

Okay, then have that one. No probs. Any others though (genuine question).

    Look at the stats. He's 24th out of 25th for save percentages this season;

    https://www.fotmob.com/en-GB/leagues/48/stats/season/27195/players/_save_percentage/championship

No surprises, Viktor Johannson is top with nearly 80%. Baz isn't even on 50%

It was the same in 23/24. He was bottom then too iirc.

Stats can be misleading. If Johannson has 8 shots pea rolled at him, he gets the best ratio. The chances we concede are just so easy!

Pompey only had one shot on target though.

We've had this discussion before. Che has a point that he rarely makes great saves, since he's been here how many can you think of?

    Wrexham
    WBA away last time round
Think you mentioned one of Watford/Norwich in that season?

    After that I'm really struggling.

So how can he get better save stats if we only concede one or two chances a game and they are absolute sitters?

He got to nearly every cross in that game.

I'll admit that me and others are picking faults with him unjustly, but at the same time I do think you might be a bit guilty of burying your head in the sand a bit on this one.

Just checked, and in 23/24 he was second worst keeper in the league for saves percentage. This season I'll surrender the argument and say you're right, not much has been his fault. But second worst keeper in the league over a whole season in his last full campaign? Can't really argue with the stats on that one.

No, I know how bad he was that season. Pointed it out plenty of times myself. But I am judging just this season and not once have we conceded a half chance and he let it in. We are like those sheets of paper the contestants have to defend from water cannons in Takeshi’s Castle.

I agree stats can be misleading and I'm always very vocal about them being misused.

But looking back to our last championship season if you're leaving games thinking he doesn't make many saves and the stats also say he's not making many saves then there's more than a good chance that that's exactly what is happening.

Johansson in that season also played for a far worse side than us who coughed up loads of chances.

Edit - just seen your next post saying you're only talking about this season.

I don’t disagree. I just answered this in my other post. However, it was always a thing that keepers in bad teams looked better. More shots meant more saves. The worst team to keep for is a dominant team with a really sloppy defence. You just won’t get good stats.

I think with poor Baz he's been a focal point for ****ness because he's the keeper. Ultimately the one position where fans think they should be keeping us in the game. Look how totally ****e we were last season with a keeper most would admit as our best on paper for years. Ramsdale let in piss weak shots too, but unfortunately for Baz his cards were marked before a ball was kicked.

I'm not for a second arguing he's a great keeper, he's not, but the massively more important issues are centre backs who think they don't have to jump, are too lazy to track a man and look thoroughly disinterested to boot.

Oh and tactics which mean losing the ball every 15 seconds

I admire it mate, and I'll join you in supporting him for now.

But, if we had a striker who was bottom of the stats table for chances converted over a whole season, I'm not so sure if he would get such a fresh start as Baz has been given.

We did for about three seasons in a row before Armstrong got a chance in the Championship!

Ultimately I think he's generally been fine with his shot stopping this season. Been a couple he might have done better with but certainly not any where he definitely should have or where any blame can be attached to him.

Think we'll see later in the season whether he's really improved much or not. If we're still talking about the Wrexham save in December then there's obviously still a big issue.

So no matter how many times, or how long he is in the bottom two of the goalkeeping stats, which actually only reflects shots and goals, not what team you play for, it will never, ever be his fault?

Where's my goalie gloves - I'm coming out of retirement....

I agree with you regarding not rating him and would prefer Alex in goal but think it's too early for those sort of stats personally.

If he stays there throughout the season then that'll be the 3rd season in a row and it'll be hard to argue that he's simply the unluckiest keeper ever.

Let's hope he proves both of us wrong!
