People are so impatient these days.

That said, if we don’t beat Boro next Saturday, everyone connected to the club can **** right off. I think we will though.

It would be very 'championship' for us to get a comfortable win against top of the league with the form each club is in.

All that shows is SR have consistently failed to appoint managers who fit the team and league. It's always left field clever appointments.

Jones. Sacked - Never managed in the PL prior
Selles. Released. Never managed in the PL prior
Martin. Sacked. Had managed in the Championship but in much smaller club
Juric. Sacked. Never managed in the PL prior
Rusk. Released. Never managed in the PL prior

Now Will Still, never managed in the Championship.

I think out of all of them I can see WS actually walking. It doesn't look like he's enjoying it, I think he's aware how out of his depth he is. We'll lose on Sat and he'll get to experience his first bit of toxicity at St Mary’s. I'm afraid to say this is going to get much worse before it gets better.

Well we’ll need a bit of luck, but we’re due some imo, and I saw enough against the Skates to think there’s definitely something there waiting to click.

Obviously I haven’t watched yesterday’s highlights, so I’ve no idea how bad we were, but I’m happy to write it off as a **** day at the office.

It is true as is the fact that Nathan Jones had six fingers on one hand.

I dread to think what a lot of fans nowadays would have thought about Lawrie taking us down and keeping his job?

Okay you can argue the toss about Juric whether he was sacked / stepped down or released from his contract at the earliest opportunity.
Some were interim - caretaker managers so it doesn't add up to the original sensationalised statement of "sacked 6 in the last 3 years"
IMHO SR like to give their failed managers as much opportunity as they can, Nathan Jones being the only one being shown the door in double quick time.
and I'll Chill if I want to and argue my point when not..................

If you were a manager (presumably we'd all think we were 'decent' in this position), available at this time, and the current Southampton job became available, would you?:

    1. Accept the offer.
    2. Keep them hanging on in case something better came along.
    3. Wait for something else.

Bearing in mind it is not as simple as this and you'd have to meet those running the club and despite what we guess or think, we literally have no idea what meetings are like with them, what is said, etc.

I think I might look at the past history of the club, and as I have no ego (this is why I wouldn't really be a pro football manager apart from ability obviously) I might think 'No thanks'.

But if I was an egomaniac I suppose I would be so in love with myself I think I could be the hero that turns the failing club into a rip-roaring success.

I'm not sure that type of manager is what we need.....

You could also look at it that, due to the size of the club, it will be a decent wage so if, more likely when as is the case with most managers and even more so at Saints, you get sacked you will get a decent pay off for probably no more than 18 months work at the absolute maximum.

True - but I suppose if the ego is large then the 'failure' on the list doesn't look good. I don't really have any clue, as I have said before.

Whatever way you look at it, I think it points to us waiting some while before we get a very good manager, and I think that will be more luck than judgement.

The worrying thing I have at the moment with Still is that we’ve seen nothing in terms of patterns of play, tactics etc, and not one game yet where I’ve felt like we’re getting there, and it’s only a matter of time.
If you look back at the last set of disastrous managers, we had the City performance under Jones where we played really well and deservedly won the game. Martin, you could always see what he wanted to do and we had many good performances in the Championship. And under Juric we should have beaten West Ham at home and again we were excellent at Man Utd, but so far under WS, we have not seen anything so far.

My biggest worry is that with all the previous managers (well maybe not Juric), you could see (and I hate this word) an identity. You knew what we were trying, no matter how obvious it wasn't going to work (Russel Martin).

With Still, I do not see anything other than a random 11 playing a kick about. Maybe that is harsh, but that is the bones of it IMO.

I think we should try getting it wide and crossing it a bit more. Not sure we do enough of that at the moment.

I believe that what comes immediately before will inevitably cloud the potential of a pragmatic view of the current. In 2009/10, we'd just been on the verge of going bust. We got new owners, spent a fortune, revamped a squad and got Alan Pardew in which was a massive coup. It meant we weren't so aggrieved at how the table looked after 10 games ...

    upload_2025-9-22_12-20-10.png

Even with the 10 points given back we'd have been only up to 21st place. We all know what happened after that. I'm not saying that we're going to storm the league from this point but let's give this team time to get to grips with each other before we kick them to the kerb.

I suppose the argument is when we got Alan Pardew, nobody said, 'Who, what's he done? Think he'll be good enough?', well obviously a few must have, but I seem to remember most people being reasonably happy but that might be rose-tinted spectacles I guess.

I remember Pardew being a bit of a surprise appointment, who was probably a little bit too good for us at that time. It was a bit of a coup at that level.

I absolutely agree with this ... but it wasn't going so well after 10 league games with only 1 win. It all gradually clicked in the end.

Starting the season with Matt Paterson as your striker, Jake Thomson down the wing, and Anthony Pulis on the bench will do that <laugh>
