I agree. The West is ****ed. But ... the odd thing is that stock markets here and US are at record highs. Why? I don't understand how that works.
They've realised that they can just keep on printing more money and no one seems to care. Is a crash on the horizon? Who knows.
Breaking news literally an hour ago. The Lawns in Cottingham has been bought by MCR Property Group for housing.
I agree with a lot of the above but it was the term 'levelling up' which angered me. Like the family who owned Pappa's chip shops. They bought a franchise with the £250k hand out. Surely if their chip shops were failing ( like the one in Whitby) and they wanted to turn to burgers instead then they should be funding it themselves? That's hardly levelling up. A similar amount was given to a family to open up a 24hour convienience store down Silver Street a bit back, with a bigger Tesco Express already open across the road on Lowgate and another on King Edward Street, not to mention the biggest Tesco in the North of England in St Stephens.
Brew on Bond Street and Old White Hart on Alfred Gelder Street will see you right for the craft beer. Or Atom, further out on Prinny AVE.
Yeah, for some reason we completely forgot about Old White Hart, ended up going to Furleys and Head of Steam, but unfortunately their selections are much worse than they used to be.
I think he meant White Hart on Alfred Gelder Street, which is a cracking pub. Probably my favourite in Old Town. Olde White Hart is Whitefriargate-ish
I agree about Head of Steam selection. Used to be good, but rarely anything I like now. Rarely go in Furleys
Blimey, is that true? I wouldn't have thought there was enough room for one that big. I agree with the rest though. Reminds me of the rich ex-banker who got a New Year honour for services to something or other because she opened a couple of high end Indian restaurants in London, bizarre. A while back now, forgotten the name.
Furleys used to have a handful of craft kegs that changed, but now the majority of them are standard pub fare, with only a couple of changing drafts.
My bad, yes, I meant the White Hart. Managed to pay £12 in there once for a Cloud water IPA. Was very nice, mind.
No, no, a pint of beer can never be 12 quid good. Unless it's the last pint on earth of course. Then again if it turns out to be Madri...
I agree with absolutely everything you say. I was only saying it was the Govt that failed to level up. All the Council did was pass the Govt money to the ones they were told to give it to (I don’t really know why tbh. I assume Govt didn’t want to make loads of payments and rather just passed it all the the Council to dish out)
Much like Freetown way, not sure who paid for it to be made the first time but presumably the council. All dual carriageway and part one (also last) of the inner city ring road. Then along came the green revolution and cycle paths were the way to go. Funded by central government the dual carriageway was converted to single lane and a cycle lane. I suppose some of the money did get into the local company and workers who did the work. Now I understand it's going to revert back to the original set up. Not sure who will be paying for that.
I don’t know much about that, but on the face of it even of it was funded by Govt in that particular case it has seemed like a local Council party political issue to me, but like I say I know less about that
Do t you think paying people a benefit that’s is pro data a higher hourly rate is having some effect ? I’ve lost count of the people mostly women who ‘could only work ‘2 or 3 days ‘ because it would affect what they were given . As for Amazon successive govt s fall over themselves to give grants and tax benefits to these people to encourage them to be successful here , yet there’s no need because they want to sell and distribute their goods globally to such an extent they’d have to do it anyway to be successful . High street shops never got those benefits because they were t big enough and worth enough on the FTS Amazon are all over the country building big sorting and distribution centres and have been for some years . The benefit of the BAE’s was that they made things and exported most bringing money in . All Amazon do is buy in mostly foreign made goods and they are sold in the domestic market so no external money coming in , all going out this is the problem .
The only comparison between Amazon and BAE was local employment in the Brough area, distribution and high tech manufacturing are totally different sectors, BAE continues to export and turnover billions, just has a smaller footprint in East Yorkshire, Amazon provides a very good service and literally delivers and I'm glad it also now provides local work.
Not quite sure what you mean around pay and benefits, but tbf I didn’t explain what I meant well either. I think that anyone that works a full 40hr (ish) week should be paid enough that they don’t need benefits topping up their wage. Otherwise effectively the employer is only paying part of what the job is worth and tax payers are paying the rest.
Hi DBT totally and utterly agree- an example two months ago a local air con company wanted a administrator to manage so many duties sone purchasing , accounts hotel bookings for engineers , time sheets the list was endless ! The pay ? National minimum wage !! Wife’s employer pays that to every cleaner . It’s an absolute disgrace that job should have paid a good supervisors wage at least £25k upwards and more, trouble is companies won’t pay decent wages for ‘ overhead ‘ roles . I’m afraid there are too many employers who won’t pay a decent salary to anyone , as you say the worker needs supplementary support.
