As lucky as teams like Liverpool can be, that was just sheer stupidity from the Burnley bloke. I’d be fuming if a City player did that in injury time after the team had held out for so long
If anyone wants to watch some free live football this afternoon on Youtube, the Greek Cup match between Ellas Syrou (Greece of Syros) -- newly promoted to Super League 2 for the first time ever -- away at Atromitos of Super League 1 (the top Greek division) will be here at 2pm UK time Ellas Syrou are the only team from a Greek island other than Crete to play in the top two divisions (I think), and although they're favourites for relegation they've managed a great away draw at Chania in their first Super League 2 match, and now in the league phase of the cup will play three teams from the top division -- including Olympiakos at home in December. Bit of a fairytale football story as in the last three seasons while I've been watching them as my second team they gone from the local Cyclades league, then two seasons in the regionalised amateur third division, and now up to the professional ranks.
I’ve been watching them for years, good team. Got some really good players we should be having a look at. Angelos Kola and Georgia’s Kalos are an excellent pair of wingers for them that we could probably do with here.
Thats weird. I was talking about Syros yesterday as I might go there next summer. Its an amazing achievement to get in the top divisions there. I have just got back from Naxos and they play in the regionalised island leagues, small ground and I imagine very small crowds. To put the Syros achievement into perspective, the last census had the population of Syros at 21,000, slightly more than Cottingham. Their stadium holds 2,500.
Syros is lovely but a working island with a shipyard so very different to the other Cyclades. Good place to live part-time as property relatively cheap and there’s a hospital. But it’s very popular with Greeks in July and August. Better in the shoulder seasons. Sadly we’re getting tonked 4-0 down.
I suspect it will depend whether Olympiakos have already qualified for the next phase of the cup (as it’s the last game of the league phase). If they have they’ll probably send the B team - who are also in Super League 2 so it might be more evenly matched. And 90% of football fans on Syros support Olympiakos anyway. Still, I’m going to try and be there. But at the moment we look a bit like a National League team playing a Premier League team.
Oooh, I thought my chances were over, but looks like they are not after all. "an open training and signing session" I'm going to turn up to train and to sign. Just stick me up front; tbf, I can't do much worse than Destan's 45 minute cameo yesterday.
