I see that it was reported last evening / earlier this morning that David Maxwell was retiring from race riding. Now I see the story has advanced further with the news that he will also be selling all 16 of his UK based horses, at a dispersal sale, at Cheltenham Racecourse on October 24.

    Worcester Bumper
Trainer with best bumper strike rate is Dan Skelton with 16.88% (Jonjo, Mccain and Fergal all 16 or 15% in that order). Jockey with best strike rate is Brian Hughes 17.71 with Skelton next and a gap to STD and Burke.

Combined its Hughes and Mccain 22.2%
    Skeltons 18.5%
    TDs 14.6%
    Ferg and Burke 10.9%

So the key here is that we have yards that are better in bumpers than others, and that half the field target them and the other half less so. The key negatives here are Derek Shaw (0 from 46) Keighley (24 from 349), Tom Ellis (1 from 19) and Max Young (1 from 28) with Richard Phillips doing ok with 39 from 350.

Now if you zoom into Worcester numbers, its more of a positive for Jonjo (21%) and NTD (20%) with Fergal and Skelton behind on 18% and 16% respectively. This is interesting as Worcester is nearby for all four, and I probably had assumed that Skelton or Fergal would be coming out on top. The big surprise here is that McCain is 1 from 23 at the course.

Work intervened, but here are some numbers!

It wasn't the fact that he was quitting the saddle which I found most newsworthy but the fact that Maxwell is also dispersing. That sale should certainly add some excitement to the first day of Cheltenham's 'Showcase' meeting on Oct 24th.
