My brother back in 50-60s went to Saints and Pompey so had football every Saturday. Shows how cheap it was then. Not an uncommon thing to do. One pundit (don’t remember who) said rivalry really turned nasty when Saints became the bigger club. I understand the police presence, but I sometimes wonder if that gives a sense of importance to the thuggish element. Encourages it because they can claim the police prevented them fighting…when in reality most wouldn’t want a real barney.
