Over to you Yorkie. This was to settle an uninspiring 0-0 draw for the 3rd and 4th place play off between Birmingham City and Stoke City at St.Andrews in 1972. The first time a penalty shootout had been used in the FA Cup. The Sunday times were unimpressed by the ritual, as were most fans at the time (some still are including myself). This play off match was only played 5 times between 1970 (Watford v Man.utd) and 1974 (Leicester v Burnley) by which time they realized that few people were interested. Take it away.
