Gillingham is often described as an open air prison and 70% of residents have never been further than Gravesend. Something should be done. Not by me.
Gillingham use to be ok, but it started to go downhill in the late 70's to early 80's. Probably for many reasons, one being they started the process of pedestrianising the High St very late 70's, around the same time the new shopping mall (Savacentre) opened a few miles away, then the appearance of Bluewater in the 90's, the demographics were changing, people that could afford it were moving to new out of town housing developments and the gradual decline began. It's a very multicultural area now, when I was at school we had the grand total of one Indian boy in my class, from my memory you would only see white faces on the school bus. Now when I've travelled through the area during school kicking out time, you could probably see more or at least as many people of other ethnic origins. I wouldn't say crime was more as a result of that which Sucky often says is experienced in London, I'd say whites were still the scrotes, but I've no evidence to back that up, it's more a perception. So I don't feel intimadated when I walk through the area, just apply everyday sensible precautions in your own behaviour and not flashing the cash, aware that Gillingham has a huge foodbank, ie so there will be many poor people. The little market stalls at the weekend keep it vibrant.

He held some rather 'extreme views' - many that I personally disagree with, particularly in regard to women's rights and freedoms - but again, nobody deserves to die for simply being a bit of a dick with outdated views ... Somewhat Ironically, the manner of his death does put America's gun laws firmly, and tragically, in the spotlight once again...
