Second best ??....... not even 4th best ! Performance was a shambles... Bromley bossed the game... Bulllied the Gills ( legally )... they wasted some great chances... Andrews showed his limitations - despite his goal, he missed an easy header. Nevitt - should take up running - at least he won't be expected to try to score a goal..... Never a penalty - although to be fair - in the first half, Mr. Magoo with the whistle couldn't see blatant shirt pulling...... Thankfully there was no VAR - Andrews would have conceded a handball - and McCleary would have been booked for simulation. All-in-all - daylight robbery .
In recent weeks we have been spoilt for choice when choosing star players on these threads, today we are scraping the barrel following a reality check performance where whilst we showed great resilience to get a point we were out played and out muscled by a Bromley side who could and should have been out of sight before we scored our first. The managers came out of the game with more credit than the players in some respect, Ainsworth for breathing fire into us a half time and for making positive changes that eventually bore fruit, and Woodman for his honest after match comments. We missed Masterson and Ogie today hopefully for Gale and Smith this was a learning day, neither was terrible but both were below recent levels, but give credit to the Bromley forwards as they also made Mackenzie look out of place for the first time since he was moved back again. 1. Jonny Williams - was at the heart at most of our better moments 2. Max Clark - Great composure for the penalty 3. Elliot Nevitt - Whilst I believe that giving maximum effort should be the minimum we should expect from our players, in matches like this a player like Nevitt who does just keeping making that run and being nuisance is invaluable, his lack of quality in the final third is shocking, but yesterday where there was such paucity of good performances in our team I would put him in (he is a modern day Gary Mulligan who I bemoaned greatly at the time), but his inclusion is almost proof of how bad a peformance it was.
Bromley deserved the win but thought Gillingham were much better second half and made it a very good game. Max Clark Jonny Williams Ref lol
1 Max Clark cooly taken penalty and on a day when we looked shaky at the back Max was solid and made some good runs and crosses into the box. 2 Jonny Williams never stopped running. 3 Glen Morris kept us in the game in the first half a little dodgy trying to dribble past their forward at the end though lol
I thought we were going to get slaughtered on TV those first 15 mins. I was like oh this lot are good, really good, power and clinical finishing and looking at the size of those boys I'm so happy we kept Cirino on the bench. The game had it all really, opposition that made their presence felt, a bloody nose if you mess with Andrews, a penalty that never was...I think we've used up more than our fair share of luck by now, but you know what, I'm very happy, talk about the great escape. What this season is showing for us is that you make your own luck, or is it called cheating, in fairness probably the latter in that one moment, but it was better than just rolling over to die, and that's the difference this season, the Ainsworth effect. I think Bromley have got more about them than us, and based on what I saw have to look promising for the autos, as for us it's still work in progress and we'll see what the January window brings... Just make sure you pencil in that 31st January fixture against yesterdays hosts, because if we are both still in with a shout by then, Priestfield should be rammed packed and rocking! It could be our biggest cup final since Crawley all them seasons ago (tongue firmly in cheek). Anyway to the business of the day... 1. Andrews, when it comes to heavy weights in L2, I'm glad we've got him, especially when Ogie is missing. 2. Max Clark cool as a cucumber when the heat is turned up to maximum. Scores a penalty and makes a goal line clearance. 3. The referee, without him, we would have lost.
Only dipped in and out of the game as I was busy cooking (!!) so didn't really see enough of the game to pass proper judgement on all the players. The real positive for me was McCleary. Seemed to create more in 30 minutes than the rest of the team put together during the whole match, though maybe that was because I did actually watch the last 20 minutes, not just listen and dash into the living room when the commentators got excited. Unfortunately we (still) don't have the players to finish the job. Hopefully the slightly lower pace of L2 will enable him to play more minutes than he might at a higher level, and that when our 'strikers' have got to understand him better that they'll be in the right place when they're needed. Credit to Max Clark for holding his nerve, and, according to an article in the Daily Express that I saw on Facebook, Sam Vokes for taking the pressure off him while their keeper was getting treatment. No, of course it wasn't a penalty, but it wasn't exactly a dive. VAR would have reversed it, but let's just take our luck. This one we won, others we'll lose... And, frankly, credit to the whole team for the spirit. If we had played like Bromley and only got a draw we'd be extremely upset (vernacular suppressed for reasons of decency), but if we keep picking up points playing not really very well, let's hope that we continue the run if / when we start playing better.
