I'm greedy - I'd want both. And whilst he is vile, I still say that FA commission that painted him as some sort of Child Catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was outrageous, especially as they waffled away all of Evra's transgressions as 'exclamations' and 'frustrations'. But I won't go there again.
Ah but that is back to using behaviour as a metric The comment without quoting was something akin to Better player Salah in His prime or Suarez in his prime so with no behaviour effecting the outcome If you can only have one (I want to be greedy too) Suarez just edges it for me Saint and Z are saying it’s not really a contest (I think) but I do think it’s Suarez - in their prime (doesn’t matter how long their prime was really) Fwiw if we had kept a happy well behaved Suarez I do think he tears up the record books Barca didn’t suit him - the prem and we did We will obviously ever know Was just an interesting debate from my end totally respect MITOs view Think he is wrong lol but that’s cool
If Messi and Marmite didn't exist, Suarez would have been the generational star player. He was, without doubt, the best of the rest.
He was definitely on par with them for a few years... His main flaw is- he didn't stay peaked as long as they did. Messi and the rapist both stayed on top of their game for many years. Suarez- what about 3 or 4 years top.
And there's the problem. I'm talking about raw talent, and that exists regardless of the player's personality. I kicked off this sequence calling Suarez a daft bastard, and that was putting it mildly - but he's also the most naturally gifted footballer I've seen in our shirt for a long, long time, and that isn't at all putting down Salah or any of the other greats I've seen since the 60's. Mo has shown his worth with his tally of goals, but he has a handful of defined routes to goal, whereas Suarez could somehow find the net in almost any situation.
He said "because you're black" when Evra asked him why he did something. Was he being racist or just joking/teasing/wummery? either way he absolutely shouldn't have said it and deserved a punishment of some kind- it was a stupid thing to say: but I don't think he is necessarily a racist- (he very well might be however). If Suarez was honest about saying it playfully is true, I don't think he's a racist (but he would defend himself even if he did mean it racially) If Evra's account of what happened is true, then yes, Suarez said it to be racist- although Evra's account changed when he told the ref, then when he told the manager, then when he told the press. Non racist people sometimes say racially insensitive things and racist people don't always say racist things. The black members of the liverpool squad came out in his defence at the time, not something you would expect if he actually was racist and treated them differently. I don't think you can definitively say Suarez was a racist... definitely an idiot at times. He's definitely a biter though.
imo Suarez isn't a racist he just made offensive remark with racial conatations to someone who made an offensive remark to him
I said I wouldn't go there, but.... 1) Even the 'independent' panel concluded that Suarez was NOT racist, but he had used a racist term. 2) He didn't say he 'kicked' Evra because he was black - he responded to Evra's comment that he shouldn't touch him with "Why, because you're black?". 3) He didn't deny that he had used the term negro (which was despicable, no matter what his cultural defence), and that was helpful for the panel as, apart from the audio/visual evidence of Evra telling Suarez to go and **** his sister in Spanish (which the panel brushed off as an 'exclamation') they had no evidence whatsoever from the confrontation to back up any claims of racist terms, let alone Evra being called this multiple times. 4) The evidence used against Suarez was 100% subjective. Unlike a criminal court, a workplace tribunal does not require objective evidence that Suarez intended his words as an insult (indeed, the panel concluded that he may not have). The panel instead deemed that, as Evra felt it was racist, it was therefore racist. Also, there was absolutely no evidence at all from any of the video or audio recordings that Suarez repeated the term multiple times. This judgment was completely and wholly based upon the word of Evra, as he was deemed a more reliable witness (evidently because Evra spoke fluent English, unlike Suarez, who was hesitant and confused in his native Spanish (I kid you not - they actually said that). This, even though Evra changed his story about what he was called after reviewing the video evidence and Suarez's statement (something that would stop a criminal trial in its tracks), and then was proved to have lied about why he could not bear to use the 'N' word when a YouTube video emerged of him some years earlier using that word against the whole Chelsea side. There's more, but the bottom line is this - the standard tariff at that time for using a racist term was a 3-4-match ban. Like what Terry got for a far, far, less ambiguous case of using a racist term. And shame. He should be ashamed of what he did, as should the many others who've used such terms as well, charged or not. Nobody denies Suarez is a ****, but I'm still staggered, 14 years on, how Suarez was the only one who came out of this case as the devil, and Evra, who provably lied and lied again during the whole affair, comes out as a babe in the woods. Victim blaming? No ****ing way. But telling a Spanish-speaking player to **** his sister in that language is not a ****ing "Exclamation" any more than using the word negro during a heated argument is a cultural misunderstanding. And that's all I have to say on the matter.
Not really. He missed loads of chances too. Shoot early shoot often. If you can't get by. Cheat. No he called him a porky little x multiple times. This was all gone over. 50 page reports blah blah. The reality is its a stain on the club to go wear t-shirt after and ino that would never happen except for it was man utd as the opponent. That happened v arsenal or even chelsea and the reaction would have been lesser by the club amd fans (imo) We cannot be supporting kick it out and players taking knees or firing gobshites out of the stadium etc and then forgive suarez yet again. In the cold light of day what happened then was terrible and frankly fsg got rid of comolli as a result. I was personally glad he was given a rocket the night we beat barca 4-0. He swanned in like he still owned the place and was going to be worshiped. Got some shock!
No he didn't- that was proven to be Evra exaggerating. Suarez certainly wasn't clean in all this and was totally deserving of punishment, but video evidence showed Evra was heavily exaggerating what happened to try and get him in trouble.
It's like the Messi or Ronaldo debate. In the end when you're talking about 2 exceptional players you take other things into account. Or at least I do. I'd actually put Suarez beside Torres for most exciting player with some other similarities. Suarez and Salah are very different. Salah's sheer determination and drive has helped us win everything. Even without the character assessment of both, I think Salah is the better player.
True. His passion was what got him into trouble. I always said his growing up with 5 brothers in difficult circumstances where he would have kicked, bit and fought to get his way was what we saw on the pitch. He very much acted like a grown up child.
Proven? By what. Seriously the only official document on this is the report itself. Choosing to believe whatever else isn't really something supportive imo. He took his punishment in the end.
Unfortunately Isak hasn’t got any meaningful game time for Sweden tonight. Hopefully can get 30/45 mins in next game.
Let's put it another way - there was absolutely zero proof that he had called Evra anything multiple times (or, indeed, any evidence he called him anything at all apart from Suarez readily admitting he used the term once). If there were, Suarez would have faced criminal charges, just as Terry did.
