Stupid if that’s how they view it. There is a middle ground between signing permanently all the loan players not good enough for the PL but great in the Champ and not bringing anyone in on loan.
They're obviously aware of that. I doubt it's a coincidence that within minutes of the Fernandes news being reported the journos linked to the club are talking about 3 players coming in.
I am not sure how I feel about this. Emotional response is: But actually, I don’t think it will hurt us too much. I am not saying Azaz is a better player - he patently isn’t- but I think we need an Azaz more than we need a Fernandes.
It sounds like Dortmund for example might not have even been in a position to pay for the guy we look to be signing as his replacement for 1/4 or 1/3 of the fee. Or at least had other priorities with their funds
Yeah I pretty much agree. There's obviously a problem when you do what we did last time, loan in key players and then have to spend 40 or 50 million the next summer just to keep the same squad together, but the loan market can still be useful.
Maybe clumsily worded. But selling your two saleable assets and loaning the other away and then not really reinvesting and sliding down the table would lead to things getting hostile in the stands pretty quickly Trying to reduce the risk of that as much a possible is what I meant. I didn’t mean placating the howls of the rabble on Twitter and Facebook comment sections
They just spent €25m on Chukwuemeka from Chelsea so probably didn’t want to spend on another midfielder
That doesn’t mean we can’t have any. Last time we had so many at one point they couldn’t all get in the squad. And had at least two players who were vital to the team and set up and so vital that we had to spend close to 40m to get them both back
Looking at the Fernandes deal being good business for Southampton or not? Without knowing the ins and out of the agreement with Sporting, based on how most deals are valued on the books I’d say it’s ok at best. Based on the £13 million deal over 5 years we would still have an expenditure of around £10.5 million over the next 4 years plus a 15% sell on at £38 million guaranteed from West Ham, that would be another £5.7 million approximately, so around £16 million owing to Sporting. That would leave the club with approximately £22 million profit plus the add ons due when ever.
Is that “with add ons” meaning the add ons takes it to 41m. That’s how I read it. So 35+6 as reporting earlier ? Or is it 41+? I assume the former. I guess some would say the former is a bad deal and the latter a good or at least better one ?
No excuse now for us not have a great end of the transfer window, incoming wise. And it needs to be quality over quantity.
Not even bidding for Sargent from Norwich seems like madness, doubtless it would take a bonkers bid…. But with misfiring attacking players being our specialty, he would join the ranks of people who can contribute goal wise quite significantly…!
I guess one major difference now, as compared to our various sales before this summer, is that we now have Spors. Maybe he's not quite as fussed about getting top dollar?
