Always overshadowed by others I think. Good but there always seemed to be better around.

Question for all: Is there any type of music that you just hate completely? Something you have tried many times to get enjoyment from and never once gained a drop from?

All metal? And everything with rapping in it?

For me it just has to be modern R&B pop, and I don't think I can think of anything else off my head. It does a massive disservice to some great music under the R&B blanket term from decades ago and is, let's be honest here, 99.9% about 'urban culture' and fashion and 0.1% about the music.

mmmmmm apart from barber shop quartets and jazz bands (the gazoo type) but i wouldn't say i tried to get enjoyment from them and various forms i hate (r+b modern,Michael Jackson etc.) i guess i'd have to say folk music (not dylan but the bearded weirdies that accompany morris dancers) and modern metal bands god knows i've tried but i just can't

Pretty much all metal yeah. Certainly the heavy stuff ... thrash, death etc. But even the soft older stuff like Maiden or Sabbath isn't to my taste.

As for rap ... I just don't get it and the music that goes with it usually takes a backstage. It can go alright used in conjunction with a song but only if used sparingly.

Agree totally about r&b and urban culture, it isn't really about music for me either.

Generally I don't like mainstream pop ... it is too bland for me, but I do like some of it.

Naturally, I completely agree with your final sentence there. You can almost always guarantee that if it has been in the popular music charts during the last 10 years it is probably not worth bothering with. There's the odd exception that proves the rule, but I don't mind waiting a bit longer to get into the odd band/artist if it means I get to avoid tons of bilge.

On rap, if we're talking mostly hip-hop I'd say that there are quite a few albums I enjoy but, as with most forms of music, many I can't stand. The difference with rap is that it is pretty much entirely based on rhythm as opposed to melody and thus the enjoyment musically comes from syncopation and repetition so it really excludes a lot of people from the word go if they need plenty of melody. Most fans are obviously into the lyrics too, but that never interests me if I'm honest.

Similarly with metal, a lot of it is based on rhythm - particularly the heavier you get, generally speaking the more reliant it is on rhythm for any enjoyment at all. I've never been a huge metal fan but there's a few bands who have put out some, in my opinion, very interesting works in the last twenty years because they've stretched the realms of what you can do with the metal setup, no longer simple headbanging and loud screaming! I used to enjoy listening to a few albums these guys put out in the late 90s: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfslLWySZYg not been keen on anything they've done in the last 7 or so years though.

Haha 80s hair metal is almost all completely terrible isn't it? How can you listen to it without having the volume as low as possible, cringing and hoping that nobody else can hear that you are in the same room as it?

See this is the problem with classifying music. Just been listening to that Opeth track and I wouldn't consider them to be metal but rock, same with QOTSA who I like and have seen live twice. I'm also a huge fan of Killing Joke who have at times almost crossed over into metal and have been a big influence on the genre.

I guess the truth is that there are exceptions to my taste but I generally don't like the heavy type of guitar based music, especially if it involves screaming vocals and big guitar solo's or the musicians trying to break records for playing their instruments as fast as possible. I tend to like my music with room to breath and a melody clearly visible.

As for rap you are probably right ... it could be the style of delivery I don't like. I can't really put my finger on it but I just don't get a buzz of enjoyment from it, even when I think the lyrics are good.
