I saw the plans back February or March when they were being displayed in Keel Square. Brilliant designs and ideas. It'll totally transform the city centre

It's one more step. One more part of a serious plan coming together.

Very impressive. Sunderland are genuinely bucking the trend. Cities of the same size elsewhere are mostly either stagnating or going backwards.

Good things bring good things. Keep it up people.

Wasn't sure what thread to put it on but nice little buzz about the city tonight with the fan zone for the rugby. Area around town hall, keel square looks superb and the USA fans seemed to be enjoying it. Also, the new bridge looks class lit up

Great to hear. Sunderland looked great on tv earlier and there will be fantastic coverage of the city tomorrow with the World Cup.

As an outsider looking in I certainly hope residents don’t put all the fantastic work over the past few years at risk next year.

Nice little video showing what is going on.

Edit: it won't let me link it on here. Look on Facebook for Mackem Life and it's her latest post.

There’s so much going on with Sunderland it’s becoming difficult to keep track of it all …

… the city, the club and the whole area is having a huge adrenaline shot.

In some ways it’s like watching as a bystander while simultaneously being totally involved.

What a massive change in the club that was dying.

So the bridge is temporarily open just for todays game and then shut again until further notice is that right?

A snippet in the athletic last week said it was opening temporarily for the rugby tonight, but won't be open fully until October

    Here's the snippet.

At lunchtime in renovated Keel Square office, construction workers have lunch in the sun. The £30milion, 260-metre long Keel Crossing footbridge is in view — it will be accessible for 24 hours for the opening Women’s Rugby World Cup match at the Stadium of Light next Friday. It will then close before a full opening in October.

Hopefully, it'll be open for the Wolves match on 11th October then.

Probably work at one or both ends rather than the bridge itself.
    It'll happen soon enough!

Just had a walk around keel square, the new bridge sheepfolds and then the stadium. Have to say the council have done a fantastic job and the whole area looks great. Met a load of Americans, Leeds people and others from Essex and the common theme was we should be proud of our city

I hate to be the one to speak out of turn but I have an image of the new bridge, in my mind, that won't shift ...

... I'd like the first march across to be for a night match when the stadium has the searchlights on and the whole place lit up.

Walking across for a friendly, or the rugby, wouldn't be so great imo, and I can wait.

They should definitely look into putting the searchlights back on for night games. There must be a low cost LED option these days.

Apparently the company supplying the paving slabs went bust, they sourced new ones, but there's been a delay in getting them shipped to finish it off. I had a walk over it myself and it's very smart even with the tarmac temporary finish, and the public square near the Sheepfolds Stables is pretty good as well. There's definitely a Wembley feel about it.
