Lucy Connolly pleaded guilty because she was told that she would be remanded in custody, potentially for a year, before her case was heard if she pleaded not guilty. Ricky Jones pleaded not guilty and was bailed until his case came to court. Obviously this is not two tier justice. There was no ‘verdict’ in the case of Connolly as she pleaded guilty, probably acting under bad advice that pleading not guilty would see her languishing in a cell for twelve months rather than being at home raising her daughter. Instead she ended up with 31 months away from her daughter for saying naughty things on social media. The anecdotal evidence of the Jones case would appear to suggest that a jury of 12 peers in Snaresbrook are likely to be in need of a trip to Specsavers; and that it is okay to rant on the street inciting people to attack ‘the far Right’/Fascists.
