European leaders appeared cautiously optimistic after holding a virtual meeting with Donald Trump on Wednesday, two days before he meets his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. Trump reportedly told the Europeans that his goal for the summit was to obtain a ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv. He also agreed that any territorial issues had to be decided with Volodymyr Zelensky's involvement, and that security guarantees had to be part of the deal, according to France's Emmanuel Macron. Speaking to Trump had allowed him to "clarify his intentions" and gave the Europeans a chance to "express our expectations," Macron said. Trump and Vice-President JD Vance spoke to the leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Finland and Poland as well as EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and Nato chief Mark Rutte. The Europeans have been sidelined from the hastily organised summit in Alaska and their phone call today was a last-ditch attempt to keep Ukraine's interests and the continent's security at the forefront of Trump's mind. To an extent, it seemed to work. On Wednesday evening Trump rated the meeting "a ten" and said Russia would face "very severe" consequences unless it halted its war in Ukraine. He also said that if Friday's meeting went well he would try and organise a "quick second one" involving both Putin and Zelensky.

Tbph mate, i've given up even listening to it, Trump don't know what he's doing and will probably just give Putin whatever he wants. I genuinely can't see Trump solving anything that the Ukranians will agree on. I heard something yesterday about Trump conceding minerals to Putin, yet I said months back that him and Putin have probably already cut a deal on this. I genuinely think he's in cahoots with Vlad, but the Russian leader aint quite playing ball as he would hope, so now he's running around with his tail between his legs, pretending he's getting things done... While Putin probably has plans to reclaiming some of Alaska as well. I can't see this going well.

This mate. There's a reason Russia poured so much time money and effort into trying to get Trump elected, because they know he is easy malleable and easily influenced. He seems to base foreign policy on the last person he's spoken to and he'll flip flop based on what mood he's in that day. The 'plan' looks like it's going to be Ukraine conceding ground in return for a peace deal so that Trump can claim he's ended another war. We all want to see that war end, but at what cost to Ukraine and the people who have died defending their territory ? None of that will matter to Trump if he can claim he's ended it and worked in some trade deals with Russia at the same time. Putin has got Trump's card and he's playing him like a fiddle. It was Lammy that didn’t have a fishing licence. He should absolutely be fined but calling for deportation is a bit harsh. Foreign Secretary David Lammy has admitted he did not have a rod licence to go fishing with JD Vance and has blamed the oversight on an "administrative error". It is not clear if Vance had bought a fishing licence. The BBC has asked his spokesperson for comment.
