I'm sure these used to be made for players we were definitely trying to sign, such as this lad, rather than when a transfer is all but confirmed. Or was that just the gaston thread?

Rules are more strict these days! At the moment there's only one source reporting we've agreed terms and it's not a major one. I don't want to curse this deal thank you very much!

I’m almost at the point of starting one because Tom says not to, in a melting pot of confusion as to what might mitigate the curse.

I agree with most of this. Giving me Orsic vibes. A 25 year old who majority of people have never heard of, who has never played outside of the Russian league and I don’t think I’ve ever seen linked with any PL clubs doesn’t strike me as someone we should build the team around.

He may well be good, and especially in the Championship. But his agents comments aren’t exactly groundbreaking, basically saying we should get promoted due to the finances and squad we likely will have.

I’m perfectly fine with signing him, just not thinking we are signing the next De Bruyne

Well firstly, like most people, I'd take some of that talk with a pinch of salt. I don't know how good he is but, although it's possible he'd be a key player, very few teams are actually built around a single player these days and it's rarely something a club aims to do.

The one thing that might be relevant is the fact he plays in Russia. After the discussion on here about whether we can/should deal with Russian clubs I did a bit of googling and dealing with Russian clubs is complicated at the moment because a lot of them are at least part-owned by people/companies that are subject to sanctions. I believe transferring money into Russian bank accounts can be difficult too, although not impossible. I know some Spanish clubs have bought players from Russia and I saw one article that said Krasnodar have some sort of European bank account that payments can be made into, maybe a third party. Whatever the details, doing deals with Russian clubs isn't simple. That being the case, it's possible this guy isn't good enough for a lot of the bigger clubs to bother with the hassle of making a transfer happen but is good enough for it to be worth our while.

I guess a good recent example is Wilson Isidor at Sunderland. He was contracted to Zenit St Petersburg but was able to sign for Sunderland (twice; initially on loan and then permanent mid-season after he proved himself to be able to adapt)

It’s such a weird situation; apparently it’s taken them this long to submit an offer (after thinking about preparing it, almost preparing it, just about to submit it, etc) and anyone who knows anything about him as a player or our valuation of Dibling knows the offer will need to be a) Significant b) Well structured c) Not a complete waste of time and d) Be based in reality….but it seems that West Ham have succeeded to ignore all of the above….??!! I think rather than show ambition to their fans, it screams desperation and shows how little money they’ve got to play with….

As has already been mentioned, they are used to hand outs. Stadium, Tevez & Mascherano etc

I thought going in at half the asking price of lower is what you do when bartering in Thailand. Not when negotiating for elite players with long contracts
