2nd half was a lot better apparently, but a lot of huffing and puffing and looked void of idea's in the last 10 minutes according to a mate who travelled to the game. Poor sod. Also looked exhausted as well in the last 10 mins too.
2 games played so far. Combining both games: Rovers have had 34 shots and only 4 was on target. Had 19 corners too. Just 1 goal to show for it which was a penalty! Whereas the opposition won both games having had 5 shots on target and scored 3 of them. So is it... Issues up front with taking our chances or just wasteful shooting? Issues with creating better chances, especially from set pieces such as corners? Issues in midfield letting runners through and free unmarked? Issues in defence being slow to react to situations, inability to mark their player and unable to read games? Issues as a team being unable to win 2nd balls and sitting back creating pressure on ourselves? I say it's all of the above. And if I am correct (probable not) then DC has a lot of work to do with not much time to make the needed changes removing players and bring in the right players. We lack leaders and winners in our squad. Too many players go missing. I won't mention our keepers because I feel sorry for them when they have what they have defending in front of them.
DC has a massive job on his hands to remove our losing mentality. First goal seems crucial in our games. If we don't get it, we seem to struggle to fight back, like we just give up. Last 12 games: Won: 0 Drew: 1 Lost: 11 Points: 1 from 36 Scored: 6 Conceded: 28 Taken the lead just twice (Wrexham/Blackpool away) and in front for a combined total of 66 minutes.
Another game we dominated and have come away with nothing. We need to shake off this losing mentality very quickly. Worrying times.
First half was poor according to my mate and stats showed they were by far the better team and had most of the possession. The start of the 2nd half however, my mate said we looked up for it and DC went 4 at the back so had the extra man in attack. We had most of the possession and attacks. Just looked "clueless" in the final 3rd. His words not mine! I hope DC see's the change he made at half time actually suited us better and starts 4 at the back from now on so we have the extra threat body in attack. Can't say threat because we don't have a 'threat' currently. Although saying that, Harrison looked good by all accounts. I hope he starts next game.
Don’t like picking on our players, but Mola has been at fault for 2 goals, & both times just jogged back after being caught out !! though when we switched to 433 he did look better. Not sure the keeper is that much of an improvement on Jed !! IMO we need to improve the spine of the side, easy said I know…….
DC after the game said today's game was frustrating giving away 2 soft goals, the 1st he thinks was offside but shocking defending for the 2nd goal and then we're chasing the game. He recognises what we've been saying that the mentality thing is still there that he needs to stamp out. He's desperate for 2 more CB's and 2 more CM's. He said once he gets that and sorts out the groups mentality, then we'll be more of a team. He said he's having to manage Promise with minutes because of his injury record. They want to keep him being available on the pitch injury free as possible and also Harrison hasn't had a pre season so need to manage him too.
DC agrees with your spine comment. 2 CB's and 2 CM's wanted. When Mola joined us, I actually thought he was good. But he has gone down hill. One of those players who is really struggling with confidence and mentality perhaps.
I too don’t like picking on individual players but quite frankly I think both Mola and Moore have been extremely poor since they’ve been at the club and I’d like to see the back of both of them. Hutchinson’s not much better either.
Looking at the highlights, the first goal was down to Mola. He left his man to close down another player who slipped it through to the free man that Mola should have been covering. Goal looked close to offside but if you look across the lines of the pitch and the linesman's position, I think he's just about onside. Second goal was awful marking and Moore not strong enough.
It's the Carabao Cup this evening against Cambridge - who were relegated with us last season from L1. They have won 1 (1-0) and lost 1 (3-2), so can keep a clean sheet but can also concede a few goals as well. There is a chance we can get at them. However, they can score a few too so there is a test for our fragile defence this evening. We need a confidence boost fast from somewhere. So hopefully winning this game will be the start of our season. Interestingly enough though, the last time we scored in this competition was in August 2019 when Tom Nichols scored in the 2nd round vs Brighton at The Mem in a 2-1 defeat. Since then Rovers have failed to score in their last 5 attempts vs Ipswich twice, Cheltenham, Crawley and Cardiff, conceding 10 goals in the process.
30 degrees at kickoff - let’s hope the Gas can turn up the heat on the pitch and get this season started!
