Spurs come into the game in fourth place on 31 points, despite the set back of a 1-2 defeat to Stoke last time out, while Sunderland's new manager Martin O'Neill had a winning start to his new job by beating Blackburn 2-1 at home to lift the Black Cats up to 16th in the table. This will be the 111th time the two teams have met. The first meeting came at Northumberland Park in March 1898 when Spurs were playing in the Southern League in a friendly which Sunderland won 2-0. A second meeting followed with the year when Spurs beat Sunderland 2-1 in the old second round (today's fourth round) of the FA Cup in February 1899. Tottenham's first visit to Sunderland came during a mini tour of the North-East to celebrate the turn of the century with Spurs winning the friendly match 3-1 on 2nd January 1900. The first Football League meetings between the two clubs saw Sunderland win at home 3-1 in September 1909 and Spurs having a comprehensive win in the return fixture at White Hart Lane 5-1. Tottenham Hotspur's all-time record attendance of 75,038 at White Hart Lane came in an FA Cup 6th round match against Sunderland in March 1938. Sundeland won the game 1-0. This was the only FA Cup match Sunderland have won out of the 7 played so far with Spurs winning five and one game drawn. The only two League matches played outside the Top Flight came during 1977-78 when Spurs won at Roker Park 2-1 but lost the return Division Two match at the Lane 3-2. The clubs first met in the Football League Cup in November 1984 with Spurs drawing 0-0 away but Sunderland winning the replay at the Lane 2-1. The three matches in the competition have resulted in a win each and one game drawn. Since Sunderland joined the Premier League in season 1996-97, no further domestic cup ties have been played between the two clubs. Spurs have a good record during the Premier League Era with 12 wins to Sunderland's 5 and the remaining 3 games drawn. Spurs have taken an average of 1.95 points off Sunderland in the 20 matches played so far. In the 2009-10 season, goals from Robbie Keane and Tom Huddlestone saw Spurs win 2-0 at home with Sunderland winning 3-1 at the Stadium of Light. The reverse fixture last season at White Hart Lane ended in a 1-1 draw with Rafael van der Vaart putting Spurs ahead in the second half only for Sunderland's Asamoah Gyan to equalise three minutes later. The match at Sunderland resulted in a 2-1 win for Spurs with Asamoah Gyan putting the Black Cats ahead after 11 minutes before Michael Dawson's equaliser just before half-time. Niko Kranjcar scored the winner for Spurs in the 57th minute. Overall, Spurs have the upper hand over Sunderland with 44 wins to 38 and 28 of the 110 matches played so far drawn. please log in to view this image Full history of Tottenham Hotspur v Sunderland Matches 1898-2011 please log in to view this image They Played for Spurs & Sunderland... Great work as usual 6061. Who is the fatty, is that Andy Reid? See Bent is poking his tongue out at Levy.
Blimey, surprised they had a shirt that fitted Reid. Someone must have needed to head down to Evans for that one!
A little harsh on Campbell, started well at Sunderland before his injury. Tainio was a willing if unspectacular midfielder and Fulop (despite his clubs) was a very good keeper. The rest
Tainio will always be a legend for this
Just seen this is the 'Spurs version' of the Sunderland OMT Have been posting in the wrong one I loved Tainio BTW, a Spurs fan playing in a Spurs team that beat Chelsea in a cup final, now that's a dream come true
Nice one Ensil While TT may not be a bona fide 'Spurs legend', he is a legend in my eyes and many others. A cult hero, without any doubt, especially because he was a true Spur.
...I think you over estimate the average Englishmans grasp of Finnish! You could call her teapot in Finnish and I wouldn't know!
I really hope Cattermole doesn't play, he could easily 'get amongst us' or whatever the favoured football euphemism is I'm going to watch this one sober, because I feel that Stoke II - The Nightmare Returns could soon be upon us. If we lose, I don't want to be ranting, I think I'll just go to bed and
Team News http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/articles/team-news-161211.html? King Led may return to help save us once again, but then again, etc, etc. Friedel; Walker Gallas/King/Bassong BAE; Lennon Scott Luka Bale; VDV Ade seems the likely line up.
Lets hope Ledders is ok,i just don't think Stoke would have scored those 2 goals so easily if King was there.
I reckon it'll be the team that started at Stoke except with Kaboul replaced obviously. If there's a chance that King is fit, he'll play and Bassong is there as backup on the bench if needed. Kaboul's suspension is only 1 match right?
