Of course they did, they've been investing in young players heavily since they were in L1, they have a top youth academy and they're patient. 5 of the starting XI from the play-off final were with them in L1. Promotion probably happened a little bit earlier than expected but I don't think it was a massive shock. Their foundations were in place.

Coventry are another one on that path.

And it is easy to turn a profit on young players, the fees championship players go for is exorbitant but you need patience and the right environment. Changing your manager every year does absolutely nothing for that.

 

Do squad numbers mean much these days?

 

OK so then there were clearly more teams than you claim who could have gone up. So finding that point of differentiation is clearly hard to do to make it a reality..
