SIR CHRIS HOY found himself on the receiving end of a tirade of Twitter abuse today — after angry Spurs fans mistook him for hated referee Chris Foy.
The four-time Olympic cycling champion was flooded with insults sent by Tottenham supporters who BLAMED him for their team's 2-1 defeat against Stoke.
Foy was in charge during Sunday's game which saw an Emmanuel Adebayor goal wrongly ruled out for offside, two penalty appeals for handball turned down and Younes Kaboul harshly sent off.
But when some fans took to Twitter to vent their anger they confused Foy with Olympic legend Hoy.
Sir Chris hit back at the insults tweeting: "Just for the record 1) I don't need glasses and 2) I do not lead a double life as an English premier league ref. That's Chris Foy."
But he clearly saw the funny side and later added: "Still getting some rather amusing grief from Spurs fans! On the plus side I've learned some new 4 letter words today. #FoyNotHoy."
Among his abusers was Tottenham fan chutneymutt who wrote: "#Chris Hoy, not only are you a useless c**t of a referee, you also support Stoke."
And JohnnyJ_Smyth added: "Robbed ! Chris hoy calls himself a premier league referee ! #mug."
Yesterday afternoon the hash-tag #FoyNotHoy was trending on Twitter as other users poked fun at the hot-headed Spurs supporters.
RED CARD ... Chris Foy
Submole wrote: "Funniest thing ever on twitter, spurs fans abusing a national hero because of similar surname. Their idiocy knows no bounds #FoyNotHoy."
And Gooners fan Arsenes_Eyes joked: "RIOTS RETURN TO TOTTENHAM: "100's of youths dressed in Spurs shirts have destroyed & burned all Bicycles in the area #'FoyNotHoy"
A spokesman for Tottenham declined to comment.
