It is all well and good waiting for outgoings before making signings, but that puts you in a poor negotiating position. Hopefully we make a few big signings sooner rather than later.
If, and I mean if, we can turn the sale of Dibling into Fellows and Rudoni coming in I will be very, very happy.
It's one of my worries about the skates game coming when it is immediately after the international break. They'll likely have a very settled team whereas we'll probably have a very chaotic final week of the window.
True but the Skates game is 13 days after the window shuts. I don't think we'll have that many players going on international duty and Still will have time to get any late signings settled in.
Keeping Fernandes always seemed unlikely. I’m one of those who wouldn’t mind us moving on the people who underperformed last year and don’t show any indication that they will cut it if we get promoted again. Sure we can have them get us out of the championship again and then rinse and repeat. Sooner the change starts the better really
Whilst I agree to a degree it feels like a lot to do/risk to take in one window. You can bin off 80% of the squad who we all think aren’t PL quality, but did help us get promoted in the first place. You have to replace them with (presumably) players you do think will not only be able to get you out of the Champ, but also you think will be better in the PL. Seems a lot to do and very unlikely to actually work in practice. We have the same team that got us promoted last time, minus KWP, Armstrong and Adams (I’m not including Brooks/Rothwell as they didn’t feature that much across the season). Sure the players we have now are arguably worse than those three but doesn’t feel impossible to be able to sign a couple of players who can get us over the line again. Will leave us with loads to do if we do go up next summer, but would be easier as a newly promoted side than a recently relegated one to bring some PL players in.
Jack Rudoni is represented by the same agents that look after Will Still, Quarshie, Harwood-Bellis and Archer - so they're both well-known to the club and Johannes Spors has already done business with them twice this summer...
Not expecting it to be 80%. But it’s hard to get animated about rumours of the likes of Aribo and Smallbone potentially moving on. As long as we do replace them of course
Yeah I’m fine with doing a few this summer then a few more next summer if we do go up. Can also make the argument that players under a different manager/system can look a lot different. I’m sure in some set ups some of the players we have written off at PL level could be competent
Say Coventry want 15-20m for Rodoni and West Brom want similar for Fellows if we went for that (seems optimistic as I’m sure both have had PL interest) then it would be the championship equivalent of what we should have done with month from big value sales. Sell Dibling for 40-45m and spend majority on just two players rather than spreading it over 4 or 5. And going for the highest value we could attract at the time I know it’s difficult because of the nature of the PL but imagine if the VVD fee partly went on a central defender who was valued at 20-25m or above. Rather than half of that on Hoedt. Replacing a 70m player with a 70m is never going to happen for a club like ours. But a 12-13m player is such a big gap unless we are really lucky And if we scale for Dibling it would be like trying to sign a new attacking midfielder for 6-7m. Which is probably what our opening Rudoni bid was but that’s besides the point We’ve spent too long shopping at the lower end of the market - but still somehow paying big wages
You’ve answered your own question. Players like Rudoni and Fellows will likely want to come to Saints in the Championship. We likely didn’t even consider those sorts of players when we sold VVD and were trying to shop in a higher league/more established player. Which meant we would be competing with clubs who are more attractive. From memory I don’t recall Hoedt being first choice and we were linked with others but I may be misremembering
