Romero isn't suitable imo. Spends too many games out injured or suspended, and when he is on the pitch he just isn't vocal enough. As we discussed at length last year, there really aren't any obvious candidates for the armband. Son definitely wasn't one either.
It’s another reason the club needs some more experienced players, proper leader type players. I think Romero is the only option atm tbh
In Modric's case the stats even out as being slightly worse given he mainly played in a 442, which means he wasn't playing as deep as he was the main creative outlet Also worth noting his stats at Los Ladrones where he did play the deeper role: a goal every 13.8 games and an assist every 6.2, so his scoring drops due to playing deeper - but assists, if anything, increased
Yeah I think he is too. There aren’t many leaders in football in general now, let alone at Spurs. So the best options are either those who lead by example, as we’ve done with Lloris/ Kane/ Son over the years or the warrior types who you know will never say die, which is what Romero is and what Hojbjerg was. With Palhinha coming in he’s in that mould too I’d say, not sure how vocal he is but he could be someone to hopefully rally players in some capacity.
It's difficult from a distance to judge who would be a good captain because we don't really see the players interacting off the field or who commands the dressing room. Romero is clearly a strong character but possibly too much his own man. Solanki and Porro both possess the kind of driven behaviour you want from a leader, maybe they would be suitable. Managers tend to take the captain's role in many ways nowadays so the players they pick are not always the obvious ones.
Or just couldn't get the best out of him. The Villa version is there, but Pep wanted to straightjacket him, imo. Villa gave him a freer role and it is what he needs.
The Villa version also had more yellow cards than goals, and generally looked bang average at best. He is a good dribbler but with little end product. I reckon Pep thought he could coach that into him but failed miserably.
Pep plays with much more attacking FBs, which required his wide attackers to do a lot of tracking back, something Grealish didn't do at Villa and isn't very good at. It's as simple as that imo, but for the same reason I don't think he'd work well here either given how attacking our FBs are. Wissa is the obvious choice, for me.
Just realised I posted Monday's updates about Enzo Millot headed to the oilfields and Fermin Lopez being available in the pre-season thread...
Grealish to Spurs makes even more sense with the news that Maddison is most likely out for the season. Can play off the left and in the middle. He’s a treble winner and a big name. Get it done quickly please Spurs.
Still a lot to do now in this window. Maddisons injury leaves us needing a 2 forward players and another (preferably left sided) defender and we also need to get a couple out. Grealish ticks a lot of boxes for me and whilst his wages are a joke, I would expect City will have to pay at least half wherever he goes. If we are truly serious about backing the manager the Eze should also be in the equation, though I have said before that I don't see either arriving any time soon. El Khannous is another player who keeps getting mentioned but other than scoring against us I know very little about him, other than he is another youngster and probably of to the AFCON in January. I think that experience, home grown and premier league proven are also important factors as we get closer to the start of the season, and beyond these two I don't see many who tick all the boxes.
Yeah in an ideal world, Grealish probably wouldn’t be the answer but with Maddison and Kulusevski both out injured then it’s a no brainer imo to take him on loan for the season.
Would rather get Harvey Elliot. Young, hungry and very talented...and is not getting in the first team at Liverpool and wants more than being on the bench.
United sign Sesko for £74m, and with that - they've completely refurbished their front line well ahead of the season starting. I wish we showed that kind of ambition. This is the club we were pouring scorn on not so long ago. We dither and dally, injuries accumulate, players with no future are still here. Frank's on the usual hiding to nothing, I fear.
Really? He was a child at the time. I'd sincerely hope the ****e I said when I was 16 is still used as a measure of my character. People grow up and change, sometimes drastically.
