This reminds me of when Boro bid like £5M for Greaves during the summer of the 22/23 season. We kept him for two more full seasons and sold him for nearly four times that much. I’m a little concerned that it’s being reported that we’d entertain offers above £10M for Hughes. We shouldn’t be entertaining any offers unless it reaches Jakirović’s £20M valuation. The party line should be that he’s not for sale this summer.
No way we should sell Hughes in our current position. We are sitting in 7th just outside the playoffs.....
Seems like we're trying to outwardly appear unwilling to sell but clubs must know we are really. You wouldn't have this public talk among serious journalists of interest and bids if it wasn't a realistic possibility that he goes. His agent has probably made it known that he's available for the right price and realistically it's probably less than we think. The £20m talk will be us trying to push it higher whilst knowing full well it won't be as much as that. Like Greaves he is going to be worth more in the future and if we can hold out then we should, but with the finances as they are we might have our hand forced. If he does go, then it makes letting both of Jones and Macca leave even more damaging.
I’d be offering Charlie Hughes a longer term and Improved contract. It may only be valid until the end of this Season. Not sure on his current pay, but by all accounts it’s not at the level of others in the squad. Look after and reward your assets.
This is where Ehab went wrong. What’s a 250k wage rise to the fact we could get another 3/4 million in him.
I can’t see Hughes wanting to go Coventry. They’re in a lot better position than us, but still too much of a sideways step. I could see him going to an Ipswich/Southampton this season and almost being guaranteed promotion, but I think the most likely scenario is waiting 12 months and getting a prem move. Gelhardt coming back might have an impact as well, as daft as it sounds
Hughes is capable of a better move than one to a newly promoted PL team. I think he could move to an established PL team in 12-18 months.
Sometimes these clubs wait and let them go to a low Prem side to make sure they can hack it, which in my eyes is a waste of money. Wasn’t he released from Liverpool as a kid? Most teams and scouts will know everything about him.
Only if the Restriction is lifted if it’s not then don’t think about selling, if it does get lifted sell buy Frigan then use McCarthy to replace him and keep the remaining funds towards costs or Jan.
They’ve had all window to take Hughes, if they were serious they’d have done it when the transfer restrictions were first announced to take advantage of the uncertainty. Now we have a solid squad there’s less incentive to sell and less reason for the player to want a move. It’s just mind games from Coventry, ultimately, the can’t afford him so all of this is just noise from them.
If he went to Ipswich we should ask for Greaves back. Like **** should we let them have that dream pairing.
