I read/will read your blog Smudger. It's actually pretty good, you know your stuff and it would be a shame if you stopped.

Anyway, back on topic, I think it's a bit early to write off Maiga but aren't I right in thinking Tiote wasn't even a first teamer when we signed him from Twente? Also I think I heard somebody say he was more of a winger/striker a la Gervinho. Not necessarily the type that bags a lot of goals. One thing that does disappoint me though is the fact that he will be going to the ACN along with Ba. Shola, Best and Ben Arfa are really going to need to step up to the plate in January.

As for Tiote, I'm just going to cross my fingers all night and hope for the best.

From what I've heard, I think he was sometimes deployed as winger but is a striker, could be wrong like since I've never seen him personally.

We all said in the summer we'd still need another striker, as long as the defensive fraelties are sorted out in Jan I can't see much negative about this move.

Not the most reliable of course but his wiki says he's a striker who can play as a winger as well. I can see us using him on the wing more though, we have 5 senior strikers and just 3 senior wingers (1 of them injured as well).

Henry was once a winger, but turned into a striker!

I'm sure the whole Tiote thing will be a giant print of his face on the back page with a predatory stare in his eyes, with "WATCHU TALKIN ABOUT?!" printed on the insert.

Seems strange that he'd have a medical in December, whether that's actually allowed I don't know, but as we've supposedly agreed it with Sochaux already I guess it must be okay.

Was listening to a french radio sports channel. They claim Maiga will sign a four and half year deal if he passes the medical on the 13/12/2011, He will join in january for 8.2 Mill euros (7Mill). And they claim he was persuaded by tiote rueling out a move to chelsea or another club. Tiote said "Hed rather go back to french league then join a london club" hes very happy at the toon and wants to stay. Im waiting for a descent source to confirm it....i dont know how reliable the sports channel was..so take it as a pinch of salt. but all im hearing from france is good news on both Maiga and Tiote front. A newcastle representative was also at the Stade Rennais FC vs Stade Brestois 29 match on the 10th. Il see if i can get replay of the sports news and upload it. I watch alot of french and russian football so i try to pickup on the french transfer talks.

French league have fixtures up until Xmas so not sure if they have a winter break.
Maiga will be a decent signing as people have said he's better than Shola, Best & Lovenkrands and if the last couple of weeks have taught us anything we need strength in depth.
The Tiote thing, isn't it a response from "Tiote's camp" ie agent, which will probably be the same as usual? Doesn't want to leave, loves living in NE & doesn't want to move to London?

The thought of a front 3 of Maiga - Ba - Ben Arfa is pretty exciting I think, pace and finishing ability. Also I think these players will suit the 4-3-3 Pardew was trying to create in the summer, I think Ben Arfa doesn't quite fit into the 4-4-2 we seem intent on playing at the mo.

Got to agree with you about the 4,3,3 but I feel sorry for Best in this situation. Whilst he hasn't been scoring, he's looked really good upfront and I don't know of a player in the league who can take the ball down better than him. I guess it'll depend on the oponent, but when we're under the cosh, I'd want Best up there taking down our panicked clearances!
