The 2 goals he conceded against Brighton were not worldies, a top keeper would do better.
I personally think we’ve seen enough of Baz to know he’s a league one keeper. Terrible in the PL, poor-to-fair in the championship.

Very harsh. Past the defender and into the far corner. Not many will save those.

Yeah the fault for the first - if anyone's - was Quarshie's. And the second one was certainly Quarshie's. Harsh to blame a keeper if the defenders defend like that.

There's normally a burger van in the car park by the King Alfred pub (now closed) which is actually pretty decent for that kind of thing :emoticon-0148-yes:

We will see. I hope to be proven wrong and the clubs faith in him justified. Not filled with confidence though.

I think you might be if you stop looking to blame him for every goal. No keeper saves everything - there's a good keeper in there and I truly believe if people can get off his back a little he'll show that.

I feel that goalkeepers are always the whipping boys of every team - If a forward scuffs a shot and misses an open goal, we accept that these things happen, and we'll get another chance. If a goalkeeper is poorly positioned, or doesn't reach a cross, which drops for the opposition to score, we're immediately critical of the goalkeeper, and looking to replace him at the first opportunity. Goalkeepers don't win matches (unless you count Jimmy Glass for Carlisle), but they are usually blamed for losing a match, even if we've had loads more shots on goal, none of which go in.

Don't see how people being critical of him (or not) on an internet forum would affect his performance. He's always had the backing of crowds at games in my experience.

I agree there's no way he can be blamed for either Brighton goal though.

If a striker regularly misses good chances he absolutely will get criticism though.

Disagree that keepers can't win you matches too. SKD at Leeds springs to mind.

It must be my fault he’s been **** in almost every competitive game. If I stop thinking he’s rubbish then he will become amazing.

I don’t agree. I was never critical of Fraser when he had his dodgy patch, because he had shown enough to let it slide. Or Kelv continuously being beaten at his near post, because he pulled a lot of worldies and his all round game was good.

We’ve all been critical of Armstrong because he’s **** above championship, Sulemana because he’s a waste of a squad space and Frey bentos because he’s stealing a living.

The criticism of Baz is not his fault, but the gulf between him and every saints no. 1 in my living memory is big.

And our relegation 22/23 is probably equally down to not signing a decent striker as having a poor keeper.

Fair enough. I was only going by you looking at him for the goals conceded against Brighton - which I felt was very harsh and projecting previous dissapointments.

He's looked very good in pre-season - made some great saves and looks confident. Fingers crossed he's not needed much Vs Wrexham but when he is he continues that form.

Not saying he's definitely the answer - he may well not be - but the last time we saw him play football, he was 21, which is insanely young for a keeper. Players improve, and particularly keepers improve as they get older.

Still (and we) have seen nothing in his game since he got back to suggest that he shouldn't be given a chance to show that, particularly for the first few games. We've got five games before the transfer window SLAMS SHUT, so if he starts playing like a hologram for the first three, then I'm sure Still has the wherewithal to suggest it might be an idea to get someone else in.

Baz’s first season with us, he was thrust into a poor side in the Premiership while fresh out of League One. In his second season he was told his feet were more important than his hands and was playing behind suicideball.

Let’s see what he can do under normal conditions.

A few players coming back from injuries and those with futures up in the air, what are the predictions for the starting line ups?

    Bazunu
    Edwards Stephens Quarshie
    Sugawara Charles Fernandes Manning
    Armstrong Downs Fraser

The 3-4-3 reportedly worked well against Brighton and with Downes not 100% I wouldn’t risk a DM in a match we “should” dominate
Robinson deserves a start based on being the biggest positive in pre-season, but think he’ll be a 2nd half sub

I completely agree that his first season was in no way his fault and he wasn't actually any worse than the rest of the team.

However, in his 2nd season, I don't think the fact he was encouraged to play out and look for the pass is anything to do with his shot stopping - which is the reason most fans are worried about him being no.1.

It's not as if he will have not bothered training his reflexes and positioning because he has been asked to pass it out.

He is young and may come good eventually, but unless he has dramatically improved that aspect of his game in the past year, we should be looking elsewhere.
