The patience amongst supporters yesterday was particularly evident at half time. I was impressed by the belief displayed by BBM in carrying on with his game plan into the second half despite going a goal down. No panic changes in personel nor tactics - just more of the same in the belief it would pull us through. It was obvious we were the better team out there and his approach was vindicated. If this was last season with Riza in charge, he'd have thrown on Meite at half time, and if by some miracle we'd then gone 2-1 up, he'd have thrown on a 3rd centreback to hold on. I'm more and more getting to appreciate that tactically this guy is on the money - he just needs the players to buy into that and the evidence so far is they have. Do we need any imports? It's a long season and we're inevitably going to get some players crocked or suspended. All's well at the moment but some experience at the back is an obvious want without wishing to take anything away from that back 4 yesterday.
I also think the hatred for the officials and their terrible decision making helped deflect attention from BBM and the team. Especially when the dreadful penalty decision was shown on the big screen at half time.
I have since watched it a dozen times from all angles later on Sky and in hindsight deem on balance it was a penalty - Fish just clipped his foot. As mentioned by many though it turned out for the best as if he’d given the free kick he’d more than likely have given Lawlor a second yellow. Anyway it doesn’t detract from a poor refereeing performance all round.
Some of us remember turning up with 2-3,000 others at a 40,000 capacity stadium to watch 4th division fare.
A newly promoted side up next, them coming off the back of a loss. On a Thursday????? Chambers to come into the side? Any other changes?
I think he's retired. Or is that ret@rded? If Saturday's ref is anything to go by it will be a long, hard season. There is a train of thought that much of his performance was for the benefit of the tv cameras. Wonder what creative little darling we will get at Port Vale. On tv again.
