The Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, told Parliament: “since the election this Government have returned more than 35,000 people who have no right to be here.” (Hansard, 14 July 2025) The ONS numbers show 9,838 failed asylum claims (Albanians were 35% of that total), 5,154 foreign national offenders (criminals, usually deported; Albanians and Romanians were more than half of the total) and 8,590 enforced returns (almost half Albanians and Romanians). The numbers do not actually add up here because according to the ONS, there were 26,388 voluntary returns and 22,267 refusals of entry at ports. Surely you cannot be a ‘return’ if you were refused entry. Small boat returns in the last three quarters (since the General Election) number 1,611. As “Failed asylum seekers and foreign national offenders” equals 9,838 + 5,154 (14,992) what were the other 20,008 in this magic number?

I think I will ask Esther McVey to get Yvette Cooper to give us a breakdown of the numbers in Parliament. I looked in the ONS spreadsheet and of the ‘voluntary returns’ 8,228 were “assisted returns” (basically they were paid to leave) and 13,008 were “others”. By nationality 7,339 were Indian (up 48%) and 4,629 were Brazilian (up 64%): visas expiring, I would guess. The biggest risers by nationality were 512 Sudanese (up 320%) and 370 Colombians (up 294%). Jezza is currently in Bogota for a pro-Palestinian conference set up by its loony Left President, a fellow fan of Venezuela’s former leader Hugo Chavez.
Apparently, only about 1,000 Afghan's were attached to UK forces. If that's correct, it raises some interesting questions on who the rest of them are, especially as this is just one wave, there were other schemes too.
