All they’ve done is put a clause in so he goes from his academy scholarship to a pro contract. He still needs to physically sign that pro contract. Don’t even know if he’s any good yet, he’s done absolutely **** all so far.

The tennis was on for 4pm and by around 4.15pm I was a sleep. <laugh>

Woke up about 6.15pm to see the two guys still slogging it out. Tennis should be done by 8pm, apart from the ceremony of it.

Not decided whether to watch Chelsea or England women yet, probably stick Chelsea on as it's a final. Although my lad is coming round later, so don't really care tbph.

Won't be wrong ... because this one includes the club statement...

We invested £100 m in building the training complex because we realised we'd need a conveyor belt of 'home grown' talent to compete with the Big 6 and their FFP / PSR protection... others will need to do similar if not able to replicate what Brighton have done ...

Losing Trey Nyoni to Liverpool- whilst certainly not considered the best if the bunch now coming through - was a valuable lesson - we obviously researched how to protect our 'investments' and came up with this - they aren't obliged to sign up to the 'academy scholarship' but if they do there is the clause that says they are obliged to sign their first professional contract with us when they turn 17 - there is a potential downside - I suspect it also guarantees them the professional contract so we can't release them ahead of it - but it's still pretty astute business by the club ...

Think it says we've signed 9 up on it...

I think if someone wants a player that bad, they will always find a way round it...what have Leicester City ever given anyone, Steptoe, that's about it. :bandit: So my interest in the subject waned long ago.

So what if they refused to sign the pro contract? What then?

If they went to another team they’d have to pay you a fee set by a tribunal…

He’s not contracted past his 17th birthday, so what could you do about it?

I'm with you, I can't see how any club can keep an underage kid to a signature on a bit of paper.

At 15 he's surely not able to sign any legally binding document.

All that bit of paper does is say by staying with us we will invest in you, if you leave the investment will stop. If of age which he is not, you could ask for return of training costs if you are really that desperate and refund of any outstanding sponsorships money.

That's all meant as a generalisation btw.

I suspect if he refuses to sign the pro-contract we'll be entitled to significantly more compensation than we would have otherwise got ...

... but the time to have opted out would have been now ... I.e. not to sign the scholarship ...

So I'm chuffed ... yes he ain't shown what he can do yet in the Prem with the limited minutes he's had ... but he's the most exciting prospect that we've had for a very long time... go have a look on YouTube...
... and there are others that have also signed the scholarship deals ... everybody will be copying us on this for sure...

This is my thinking as well mate. I can’t see anywhere a 15 year old in this country can be expected to sign a contract which is legally binding.

I’m not an expert, I just remember what was going on with Riggy and his Dad saying that he was always free to go with another club until he signed his first contract at 17. That was a kid in demand because when he was 16, he had become the league cup youngest scorer and was making a name for himself. All the club could do was sell the football club to him about why it would benefit his future to stay with us.

Possibly, I’m not sure. I don’t see how it would but it’s irrelevant anyway.

You do admit now that he doesn’t have to sign the pro contract and can sign with someone else should he wish?

Yup. I was trying to think how this works in other sports, but don't know of any examples. I think a lot of things are done with sponsorship money, but you can sack your coach at anytime.

Various articles suggest it is legally binding, perhaps because it is signed with documented parental consent... what it also seems to ensure is that no other club is allowed to contact him or his parents directly but instead must direct any enquiries to Leicester City FC ...

As I said - lots of other clubs with academies will be copying this ...

Again - I'm sincerely sorry if it upsets some of the legal experts and agents that post on here <whistle>
