That wouldn’t shock me, do feel like we’re going to lose a starter from last year, obviously Neil looks the most likely at the minute but Patterson I can see moving to fill the home grown quota somewhere else
Aye just checked good memory 19/20 31/07/2019 Sunderland U23 England Sunderland U23 St. Johnstone Scotland St. Johnstone - Free Transfer
I'm expecting at least one player to make a bigger impression than perhaps thought. Alese, Huggins, Browne, Hjelde, etc may surprise a few people ... ... it's easy to get carried away with high priced, signings but players can develop later than expected. And, in my opinion, having injury problems doesn't always mean it's time to give up on a player.
Other than Browne I think the 3 you’ve named have potential to show us more. I don’t get the grief Hjelde gets, he’s not spectacular but solid in my most humble.
I'm not even sure Browne's out of the picture, especially if Neil was to go. He won't play many games but I could see him coming on for games when it's a damage limitation job ... ... or defending a draw, even a narrow lead. It may sound far fetched but I just get the feeling RLB has a role for him.
I can certainly see him staying due to the two lads being away in Jan/Feb. Plus by all accounts he is a great lad behind the scenes. He'll probably be 7th pick in cm but would probably still get a wee bit of game time
Every squad needs a player who'll step into any position and cover injuries, etc. As you say we'll have periods when players are missing and we need someone who won't sulk if he's on the bench.
This is why I want O’nien to get a generous contract with us this summer. Great servant to the club, been on peanuts all of his career and been with us through two promotions.
Seelt at only 20 against Leeds and WBA two seasons back. looked phenomenal, being in the right place at the right time is often all it takes, as Mayenda showed so tellingly last season. OaU
Depends how much Johnstone costs. If Wolves only want £3m and we can sell Patto for £10m of pure profit it makes sense from PSR perspective. If Wolves want lots more it makes less sense
I think you make a great point re Browne. I was thinking about him last night. A lot is said about needing depth. Browne might well be the perfect depth signing. Easy to overlook him as less glamorous etc but the lad has 70 caps and imo International football remains an elite football challenge. Experience comes in many forms, not just games played. Browne has experience as a captain for years, of 70 international fixtures and in a range of positions and atmospheres. His knowledge and know how around the training pitch alone could well be great for us. I would be very surprised if championship teams dont want him. But we arent getting much money, maybe £2m? It doesnt do us much good and we arent getting a replacement for that. Unless he wants away to play and be a main man again, he is very welcome in our squad for me.
I get some are getting exited because we are spending money, but some seem to want to just rip up the great team spirit created last season and pretty much replace everyone. We without doubt need some quality additions but we already have some very good players whobi think can make the step up
I think we had the best team spirit and desire to win since Reidys hayday last year. If we lose that we lose the soul of what we have become. I do think Regis places huge significance on that. I think he will be really careful to keep that as part of how we approach the premier league. The Till The End stuff was so apparent. We need that this season. I get a bit miffed when I read things like such and such can play the Rigg role, or when I see teamsheets without our current captain on it. We clearly have players in our squad who have been linked with premier league clubs, but they appear at best being eased out over time with us. I see Hume, Cirkin, Ballard, Neil, Rigg, Mundle and Mayenda all as premier league ready. If 4 or 5 of them arent regular starters I think we may well regret it as the season progresses.
The thing with O’Nien is that he has worked his way up from League 2 ( with Wycombe ) to the Premiership and has made the step up each time. That’s 3 promotions in his career. That in itself is a fantastic achievement. He certainly deserves the chance to show what he can do in the Prem.
