Subtlety not my speciality. Players report back on Monday, 8 weeks left of the window and Trafford aside there's absolutely **** all happening. 18 months and counting to finalize that signing (if we even do, Chelsea might be in for him), about 9 months and counting spent replacing Eales and more dithering over what will no doubt be an underwhelming DoF appointment - which could well just cause Eddie to throw his toys out again. Little over two weeks from the same team that kicked off the 2023 campaign playing at Celtic Park. I found a quote from Howe, something about how he was used to being the little guys with no money and how he puts spirit, hard work and character even above capable players coming into the club. There is no question that's worked for the most part, but there's just this feeling of lethargy, a distinct lack of urgency about progressing. Howe had called for quick and decisive action - we can't even agree to sign Trafford. And **** this "value for money" - Sunlun just spent £25m on Chelsea's third or fourth choice, so we need to get deals like Trafford sorted and accept that prices may have moved on a touch. I mean, Palace are spending £47m on a CB and aren't in the CL, yet we look like we're considering Schar and Lascelles to be good enough.
It looks to be one of the all time worst appointments, up there with Llambias and Wise. He really is a hopeless ditherer, by all account. Zero players, zero progress on stadium, zero progress on new training ground, two bad DoF appointments (and is trusted with a third), far too little progress on commercial deals, far too little communication. He's not even got the women's team right, with his main success being some shipping containers next to the ground and two refurbs of the existing, ****ty training ground. Newcastle is an utter black hole of information. Wouldn't be so bad if we went about some kind of ****ing business, but we're doing absolutely ****ing nothing.
8 weeks and we need 2 players - give it 2-4 weeks more and I'll be panicking but realistically we are 2 short of a seriously competitive first XI and anything else on top just makes our second string more competitive. I'd rather wait and get the right deals in rather than just splash cash for the sake of it. Pope, Tino, (CB), Botman, Hall, Bruno, Tonali, Joelinton, (RW), Isak, Gordon Dubz, Trippier, Schar, Burn, Targett, Longstaff, Miley, Willock, Murphy, Osula, Barnes Majority of that second XI can come in and do a decent job for the first XI and if we get CB (Scalvini) and RW (Elanga) (as examples) we will be fine, competing for the European places again and going deep in the cups.
Think that's why it's so frustrating, regardless of being cautious we have spent literally nothing for two years (we know why, of course), and have seen the value of the club rise, Adidas pay a lot for kits, CL football returned - how do we neither appear to have the reach, pull or funds to just get it done? The Trafford saga is a joke at this point - but more worryingly it's a precedent, as we dragged out both Guehi and effectively Elanga now with seemingly similar results. Elanga isn't even that good, he's a straight line runner when our biggest issue of the past couple of years is getting past "low blocks". Elanga doesn't fix that issue. So for me we need something different to what we have, rather than a younger Murphy. I'm concerned about 36 year old Trippier being our stand in RB as well. Targett's awful, Willock's been poor for a while, and those keepers are relegation level. We probably need something like Trafford, RW, Scalvini, Pubill/Fresneda and a creative, versatile forward like Jota or Nkunku. This club has a remarkable ability to never do what's needed.
Agree Elanga isn't all that but that's kind of the point I was making, sounds like you could pick up Harvey Elliot for £40-50m now but if we'd just gone balls deep on Elanga 2 weeks ago that wouldn't even be an option currently. Much rather Elliot or even McAtee over Elanga - both appear to be available so fingers crossed we are in discussions in the background for them instead of increasing on Elanga.
