Didn't I read recently Saylor waxing lyrically that Pardew personally took charge of daily defence coaching sessions?

    Here's a few tips:

    Man marking ( Perch/Raylor)
Put your head where it might hurt (to be tried out on any corner/ set piece)
Don't get caught out of position ( happened yesterday with Perch when he was in his own box before Simmo blocked)

Simple stuff surely for professionals . If Pardew is including these lads ( Raylor/Perch/Simmo) on a daily basis, then it must be drummed into them by now.

    I might be being harsh...but there's a lot at stake!:emoticon-0107-sweat

Raylor and Simmo are definately part of the regular group, not sure about Perch - he may be in the midfield group

Raylor looks a bit dopey which is probaly why he clumsy at times. Perch just can't defend simple as that.

To be fair, we had none of our 4 regulars in their regular positions. Simpson had to adapt his game completely, Raylor switched sides, we lost our two best defenders and had to bring in Santon (who looks good) and Perch.

Agreed, loved the way Santon was off up the wing José Enrique-ish when he passed it on.

    <doh>

We had the best defence in the Premier League at the start of the season, but because Pardew can't compose a watertight defence from four right backs his defensive coaching methods are being mocked.

    And another: <doh>

Aye, but he isnt as two footed as he claims though so I can see him shifting to right back. He looks as comfortable on the ball as any defender I've seen.

I think there'll be a few more of them before the weekends out. Move on, hope for Colo, Willo and Tiote to be back and do Swansea next weekend to move us back top 6!

The mark of a good manager is to get the most out of any team he fields. So if we're playing the B team lads, get them drilled!

I know they are 4 full backs but this pissed me off to no end. Regardless of your position in the back 4, this should be second nature.

    This.

Santon Willo Colo Raylor as our back four for Swansea? Unlikely. But I'd like to see Santon start.

I'd be happy enough with him at LB til January, Simpson's better in defence than Raylor, who should be in contention for playing RW instead of Obertan.

I don't buy all this crap of "get behind the lads" whatever. Perch should have been off-loaded donkeys ago; there are dozens of better players than him plying their trade for bloody Championship sides . As fans we have opinions and if from the last transfer window we didn't go out and buy cover, well that's simply not acceptable.

So it's not a case of hero to zero for Pardew, it's not having decent players in depth for a COMPLETE SEASON!!!!!

Where did you get that from my post?

Pardew's defensive drills shouldn't be questioned based on yesterday's performance, no manager could've got a decent back four from the players he had available. We've seen how good Pardew's defensive strategy is from the other 13 games this season, even without a left back we've had one of the best defences in the league.

Criticising him for not having "decent players in depth" is also ridiculous. He's had a transfer budget of -£30m for the calendar year, it's miraculous the first team is as good as it is. Pardew and the players, as well as Carr, have been phenomenal for us, but their efforts are being undermined by the buffoons working above them.

You donkey. It takes longer than 5 days of training to get a defence drilled! Use some common sense. Our defence didn't become good overnight. Pardew has been drilling it into them since pre-season!
