If we've settled on a sarny being two slices of bread and not a roll, then the bread itself should be a deciding factor as well. Sorry, but a couple of slices of Tesco own brand or Warburton white just isn't going to cut it. Bland ****e. Fresh bread, preferably uncut, then cut thick at home with a gulley knife. Bit of dark crust on the top. Proper bread.
I have hesitated to add my two penneth as my all time fav sandwich ? was ham and pease pudding in home made fresh stottie, second and VAR proof is, two bananas with ample brown sugar on thick uncut white bread , followed by a glass or two of Appleton Estate .
Roker cafe, 35yr ago ish, did (amongst others) king size (1/3 of a stottie as opposed to the normal 1/4) chip and egg buttie (many combinations available) with brown sauce. Also my fave for away matches, in Tesco's weeny one-bite sized bunettes (I was driving) was tuna and salad cream, not girly bland mayonnaise, with the advantage of no one else in the car liking them so they didn't try to nick them.
Tuna and salad cream is undoubtedly superior to tuna\mayo. My bairns agree too. Might have missed it, if mentioned already...but tuna sandwich deserves a spot in the final vote. Love a tuna sandwich.
Toasties are allowed lads and lasses. Partial to a corned beef and onion. Cheese and Ham is a classic too. Note to the wise, do not put tomato in a toastie - hotter than the sun.
For a staple sarnie meal, hot beef sandwich with gravy. Had one the other night at The Promenade on Roker seafront. They are superb, For a niche, once a year treat, turkey and sliced pickled onion sarnie on Boxing Day. Don’t knock it til you’ve tried it!!
If toasties are in, I'll nominate mince and onion. Great way to use up any leftover after mince and dumplings.
Ham and pease pudding Fried egg Bacon Sausage Any combination of the 3 above Cheese, ham, lettuce Crisps, preferably salt and vinegar flavour crisps Egg mayo
Two cracking toasties, both work better in a toastie machine that cuts it in half and seals the edges... Chicken curry. But my absolute favourite.... Haggis and neeps. Swapping the neeps for cheese works as well, but prefer the neeps.
I love haggis, never thought of it in a toastie context before though. Can't wait to try but I'll favour the cheese option I think.
